Four Germans were caught laying white roses in memory of Adolf Hitler at the house where the Nazi dictator was born in western Austria on the anniversary of his birth, and one gave a Hitler salute as they posed for photos, police said Monday. Hitler was born April 20, 1889, in Braunau am Inn. After lengthy wrangling over the future of the house where he was born, work started last year on turning it into a police station " a project meant to make it unattractive as a pilgrimage site for people who glorify Hitler. Police in Upper Austria province said the four Germans " two sisters and their partners, in their 20s and early 30s " went to the building Saturday to lay white roses in its window recesses. They posed in front of the house for photos, and one of the women gave the stiff-armed Hitler salute.

? Why is this a crime?

Stupid, absolutely. In poor taste, no doubt. But a crime?

I'm glad that in America we care about freedom of expression.

In Germany people get locked up for protesting genocide, if it's Jews doing it.

Which could be coming here if AIPAC wants it bad enough.

Was that meant to be a serious question?

Celebrating 'Dolf's birthday was not the crime. Displaying Nazi symbology was the crime.

Displaying Nazi symbology is a crime in Austria because that's what their law says.

Existing while Jewish, was a crime in Germany because that's what their law said.

The laws changed with the Regime, now even holding your arm out is a crime in Germany.

The targets changed but the need to Enforce Conformity remains.

What can I say? If you don't like it, stay out of Austria. Or at least leave your Nazi symbols at home.

No that's the way the law is enforced.

The law prohibits public incitement to hostile acts, insult, contempt against a church or religious society, or public incitement against a group based on race, nationality, or ethnicity, if that incitement poses a danger to public order.

Austria's parliament on Friday tightened the law banning Nazi symbols, broadening its scope and increasing punishments for the display and dissemination of any prohibited symbols to counter rising anti-Semitism and extremism.

In 2022, the Austrian government decided to amend its so-called Prohibition Act of 1947 to accommodate for recent developments such as an increase in anti-Semitism and rising radicalisation.

According to the legislation approved by all parties except the far-right FPOe, wearing Nazi insignia or any banned symbols linked to the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas or far-right movements among others will be punished by fines of up to 20,000 euros ($22,000).
