With 30% of US companies at least exploring the idea now, and a small but growing number of companies actually trying it, there's a real possibility it will take hold.

... The four-day work week was unthinkable, except in science fiction, as recently as five years ago.

But one of the many things the COVID-19 pandemic taught us is that the structure of the workplace can change significantly and still be viable.

I miss working 4-10 hour days. To make it fair, I alternated One month of Friday off and the next month of Monday off. Worked out well. Wish
I could go back to it.

In some respects (but not all) I agree with you.

Software Engineers often talk of working ~in The Zone.~

In my experience, The Zone is a state of consciousness where you have the problem to resolve visualized and are working towards a solution.

You cannot turn The Zone on and off at will, you have to build it.

Which is why I tried to reduce the interruptions of the team to a minimum.

Engineers are most productive when they are in The Zone. They are using their mind. Which, by the way, is the reason you hired them in the first place.

So, back to your comment, why not enable those Engineers to do what you hired them for?

(the stories I could tell... )

Meh. Four day workweek isn't the point. 32 hour workweek is the point.
