Michael Starr Hopkins: The Republican Party's efforts to drastically limit if not completely eradicate access to abortion in Florida and Arizona is not isolated. It is part of a larger, insidious plan to ban abortion nationwide.

Trump now spouts "oughta be left to the states" like a line someone fed him and he memorized.

He can't be trusted. Nothing Trump says is based on a personal belief.

this is just another case of Trump's self-preservation. He doesn't believe in anything but what's good for HIM.

The already-in-the-tank SCOTUS signalled EXACTLY how the Republicans can enact a national ban on abortion in their last arguments in the case about the abortion pills: Use the Comstock Act to illegalize it.

Arizona's SC only got the ball rolling with their ruling based on a 1864 law and you won't hear Trump or any other GOP mouthpiece allude to the Comstock Act because they don't want us knowing what's coming should Trump win the White House and then direct his next compliant Attorney General to resurrect this mortibund chastity law from the grave.

It's not the job of SCOTUS justices to signal their ideological allies as to how to get them to rule as they want in future cases brought before them for the same purpose of nationally controlling abortion, but this is what both Thomas and Alito did without prompting.

People better watch and understand what the anti-abortionists are doing and what their endgame is, along with being prepared to actively stop it from happening. Yes, a complete national ban on abortion is coming if Trump is reelected into the White House, so to every single woman and man in America wanting to keep access to abortion services legal, you've been forewarned. Respond accordingly.

The "pro-life" movement, not being able to change hearts and minds regarding abortion, elected upon a campaign of lies and manipulation. This is now catching up with them. They have the choice now to re-set and again attempt the hearts and mind thing, or to exert extreme oppression as a means to make and keep abortion illegal. I'm pretty sure I know which way they will go.

States rights is the only answer here. Congress and the country are too divided to implement a federal level law.

Literally the only way to settle it during this generation is to let the states decide.

You may be right. It may be the only thing that can happen in a divided government. But if the GOP gains enough control (i.e. not divided enough), they will NOT leave it up to the states. With enough power, the GOP intends to implement a nationwide ban.

So many thoughts...

1. The Comstock Act does not stop at abortion. It covers the interstate transfer of pornographic material. After abortion how long before the religious whackjobs come after Pornhub etc.?

2. The AZ law is even worse than it appears. The use of IUD's, morning after pill and IVF are all directly challenged by this law.

3. Fetal Personhood is the goal-to give equal rights to a clump of cells at the moment a sperm joins an egg. That should terrify people-it is literal handmaid's tale type stuff and the groundwork is being lain for it in court challenges, arguments and decisions and in laws being passed by religious fanatics who, IMHO are literally insane.

4. The day before the AZ judgement came down an AZ state senator brought anti-abortion fanatics to the well of the AZ statehouse to pray including speaking in tongues. www.google.com
This is literal insanity driving national policy.

5. The religious fringe fanatics represent a small minority of the population yet are controlling our national politics. The one thing that is, at this moment, a kernel in the back of my mind is that I believe they have bit off more than they can chew and 2024 could see a blue wave of unprecedented proportions. The alternative is just too insane to consider.
