Well that's why the boy breaks into cars, to get money for a legal defense.

It's sad that Hoebert couldn't even get a slug like Jenna Ellis to defend the felonious little dirtbag.

"Worst-case scenario, if we can't get something figured out with the lawyer, then we're going to apply for a public defender or whatever works best for me."
There it is, your moment of Zen.

A public defender? Now that must mean really scraping the bottom of the barrel.

I've seen lots of excellent public defenders throughout my career. Some of the best are the true believers, the ones who go all-out despite overwhelming evidence and a confession. Even though we were at opposite tables, I respected them. If you and your PD disagree about legal theory, or work ethic you are always free to fire them and request another. And you are always free to defend yourself, though that rarely works out well.

No worries, I've also seen some genuinely abysmal PDs, usually because their client was too difficult and had unreasonable expectations. I had a robbery case a few years ago where the client hand-wrote his PD's closing. The PD and the judge had a discussion with jury out of the courtroom. The PD was obviously intimidated by his gang affiliated client. The judge had to tell him "as far as I know only one of you has a law degree; that person should be the one giving the closing argument." That client earned over a decade in a lovely state run B&B.

@#11 ... I was a public defender for 31 years. I'm just having fun. ...
OK, thanks for that.
Prior to that comment, I had taken your comments rather seriously, even though I may have disagreed with them.
There always seemed to be a substantiated gravitas behind them.
Now I know to be more dismissive of your comments because you may be just having fun.

A public defender?
I have often felt that the jurisdiction (muni, state, fed) bringing the charges should be responsible for paying the defendant's legal fees IF the defendant is found innocent. This would not eliminate the need for public defenders but would have a number of advantages 1) innocent defendants would have a better chance of obtaining better legal counsel that could prove their innocence; 2) prosecutors would be more incentivized to bring air tight cases; sloppy police work would not be tolerated; 3) innocent people would not be bankrupted by expensive legal fees; 4) weaponization of justice would be less likely.

His dad was making more than $$500k a year after QBert took went to Washington. Obviously, neither parent was watching the kids. The parents should pay the legal bills.
