From the cited article...

... Teachers who decide to carry would have to undergo 40 hours of annual gun training at their own expense, in addition to receiving approval from the school director, passing a mental health evaluation, and passing an FBI background check.

Those training requirements are the same as what the state requires for school resource officers (SROs), with some lawmakers like Rep. Ryan Williams (R-Cookeville), the bill's sponsor, saying the legislation could be a solution for schools struggling to find SROs.

"If you're from a rural district where resources are limited, you don't have the ability to provide enough SROs for your community or an SRO at all, this would give you an opportunity to find a different pathway with training, fingerprints, mental evaluation," Williams told News 2. ...

OK, first - from the article...

... school resource officers (SROs) ...

What, exactly is a school resource officer in Tennessee?

School Resource Officers (SROs) Programs
www.tn.gov

... Law enforcement and local education agencies have a long history of partnering together for the safety of students.

Strong relationships have strengthened the ability of both agencies to prepare for and respond to criminal and/or threatening incidents that occur in school settings. School resource officer programs provide the crucial link between school districts and law enforcement agencies in their continued efforts to establish and maintain secure and safe learning environments. ...

Sounds good on paper (or on the web).

So, how do SROs contribute to the learning of students?

@#1 ... So, how do SROs contribute to the learning of students? ...

Maybe by protecting students from gun attacks? Yeah, that is a great thing.

But ... if so, isn't that just putting a band-aid on the symptom, instead of looking to solve the actual problem?

Like the one in Florida that hid outside while students were being massacred?

Or the dozen officers in Uvalde that hid in the hallways as the killer went through and finished off students he had only wounded?

@#1 ... So, how do SROs contribute to the learning of students? ...

By increasing the criminality of behavior otherwise normally addressed by the school and an increase in the number of students who are subject to exclusionary discipline i.e. suspension from school resulting in missed schooling

You know by being a detriment to school learning.

Wingnut Teachers will Shoot mouthy kids.

News at Eleven..

This has the potential to go disastrously wrong on many levels..

What happens if there's a mass shooting and the teacher shoots back and kills innocent people? Or a teacher accidentally shoots a kid in other circumstances?

Has anyone thought this stuff through?

First it was no license for concealed carry.

Then it was allowing guns in bars.

Now this.

Republicans are out of their frucking minds!

And they're proposing far, far less than 40 hours of training.

70-80% of students, teachers, and parents are against this.

Great news. This will produce more consent for sexual assault of students by teachers. Nothing says I want you more than a Glock pointed at someone else ...

#12 American Unity - 70-80% of students, teachers, and parents are against this.

Oh...any proof? If my kids were there I would want such a deterrent and that is the real purpose of have armed teachers etc. Seems to be none in many areas except for "authorities" to keep the "manifesto" of the mentally ill trans perp hidden from the public as was done in Nashville. The public should be kept totally informed on everything and not hidden because of politics.

These shooters are sickos looking to take advantage of unarmed victims and they will attempt to do this if they know there is no deterrent.

I'm assuming by "authorities" you are referring to the parents of the shooting victims?

My main question upon the passage of this law...

Did the teachers explicitly ask for this law to be passed?

If so, got a link?

Or, is this law just Republicans legislators posturing, trying to look to solve a problem in their usual wrong manner?

In mean, was this measure ever given a chance to see it if works?

Gov. Lee Signs Strong School Safety Measures Into Law (2023)

...Today, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee signed strong school safety legislation into law and recognized the investment of more than $230 million to strengthen safety at public and private schools across Tennessee.

"Nothing is more important than Tennessee students and teachers returning home from school safely each day," said Gov. Lee. "Every year since 2019, we've worked with the General Assembly to prioritize school safety, and this year, we've passed significant measures to fund an armed SRO for every public school, enhance mental health support and boost physical security at public and private schools across Tennessee."

At the beginning of the 2023 legislative session, Gov. Lee introduced a bill to strengthen physical security at every public school and enhance accountability in school safety protocols, in addition to an initial budget proposal that included $30 million for 122 Homeland Security agents to serve students at both public and private schools in every Tennessee county. ...

So... to my eyes, this current bill seems to be Republicans posturing.

But why?

Maybe because posturing is all the Republican Party has to offer recently?

@#16 ... These shooters are sickos ...

So, you seem to agree with the statement that it is not the gun, but the person.

That's good.

Based upon that, I'd say that you are also in favor of more stringent laws regarding the ownership of firearms?

Yer up...

Guns don't kill people. Sickos with guns kill people!

Why ----- foot around here?

May I suggest 50 cal machine gun nests on the roof, barbed wire and guard towers?

Wouldn't that be some fun! Ooh Rah! I am sure the kids will love it. Time for us to be honest with the kids. American Schools are under siege by 2nd Amendment gun nuts. No sense hiding it anymore as we already do active shooter drills and scare the hell out of them . Let's go the full Monty!

Or better yet after we get done doing stupid things (to avoid doin the right thing ) how about we pass some reasonable gun laws that prevent those sickos from getting guns and slaughtering and killing our innocent children. Too soon? Not enough dead children yet?

"Americans will always do the right thing ... after they've exhausted all the alternatives."

Hick states you got to love them. It takes months and years to train police and soldiers to pull the trigger and kill someone. They just think little MSs. Hazel is some kind of hard charging marine or sheriff in their delusions. I do remember recently where dozens of so-called tough guy cops stood just outside the windows and doors of a grammar school in Texas while some skinny kid murdered entire classrooms of kids. Yet the old frail lady math teacher Mrs. Becky is gonna do what they could not? Give us a break would ya?

With a hand gun he/she/they may have actually fired at a range once or twice.

Or are they planning to have the teacher tote an AR15 around and wear a flak jacket and tactical gear all day like she was shopping at a Walmart?

A little old, but research on arming teachers.

10. Yes, some people have thought this through. No, they're not running the show in TN.
