Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Tuesday, April 09, 2024

You know the stereotype of the NPR listener: an EV-driving, Wordle-playing, tote bag"carrying coastal elite. It doesn't precisely describe me, but it's not far off. I'm Sarah Lawrence"educated, was raised by a lesbian peace activist mother, I drive a Subaru, and Spotify says my listening habits are most similar to people in Berkeley. I fit the NPR mold. I'll cop to that. So when I got a job here 25 years ago, I never looked back. As a senior editor on the business desk where news is always breaking, we've covered upheavals in the workplace, supermarket prices, social media, and AI. It's true NPR has always had a liberal bent, but during most of my tenure here, an open-minded, curious culture prevailed. We were nerdy, but not knee-jerk, activist, or scolding. In recent years, however, that has changed. Today, those who listen to NPR or read its coverage online find something different: the distilled worldview of a very small segment of the U.S. population

I trust NPR.

I just don't find the format as useful as it once was.

I stopped listening during the time the news cycle was dominated by Curious Bush Invades Iraq. Hearing about freshly kilked Americans every morning is no way to start the day.

Intellectuals are always, unfortunately, going to be a very small segment of the U.S. population.

Which is why we don't have free or at least affordable higher education in this country.

And is just how the Proletariat likes it.

Who's the Typical NPR Listener? Wait Wait, Don't Tell Us ... (2015)
www.insideradio.com

... Totebags and the people who carry them: Through the roof! New demographic data from Gfk Mediamark Research & Intelligence LLC shows NPR listeners are just about what you might have imagined, which is something like a hyper-version of the cast of "Portlandia."

They're bright (70% have a college degree, compared to 28% of the U.S. population). They vote (74% cast a ballot in the last year). They like art (20% visited an art gallery or show in the last year, compared to just 7% of the rest of the U.S., and 38% went to a live music performance, 75% higher than the national average). And a quarter of them don't watch any primetime television.

There isn't a statistic showing their ber-tolerance when a little fun is poked at them, but everybody from "Saturday Night Live" to, well, NPR itself at pledge time, makes fun of the stereotypical National Public Radio listener and personality.

But be warned"that guy with the "Car Talk" mug may one day be your boss: NPR listeners are 162% more likely than the average worker to hold a professional or managerial role. And we're guessing, an NPR listener is 3,000 times more likely to be working on a Will Shortz puzzle on Sunday morning. ...

From the cited OpEd...

... But when the Mueller report found no credible evidence of collusion, NPR's coverage was notably sparse. Russiagate quietly faded from our programming. ....

This OpEd looks to me like a MAGA supporter who happens to work for NPR and is now bemoaning that NPR won't give credence to the lies of the MAGA crowd.

If that is a correct assessment, well then, I say, congrats to NPR for no wanting to proffer MAGA lies.

Clunker?

Been a while since I've heard/used that word.

But, yeah.

Yet another. ...

Same here, but it was the BushCo economists interviews that frustrated me.

By the late 70s my wife and I came to the realization that NPR was 'bent' left and stopped listening.

It's because these clowns expect people who lean left to toe the line at all times. No matter what. It's pathetic but here we are.

You realize republicans created the term "RINO" for republicans who in anyway veer from the narrative, right?

Weren't getting the confirmation bias you were looking for so you looked elsewhere?

Makes perfect sense.

Why isn't there a radio network that is really left wing? I want radical left wing commentators to refute the propaganda.

Why is it that certain media outlets seem to feel the need to flagellate themselves because they are intolerant of lies spewed by the right? Would Uri Berliner feel better if he had more members of the NPR staff spouting the MAGA lie that the 2020 election was stolen from Trump; that climate change isn't real; that Jan 6 was just a peaceful, non violent demonstration, etc.

Sure, there should be a balance on all media platforms. However, you don't balance truth with lies or alternate facts. You achieve balance with different perspectives of a shared truth.

NPR has moved away from different perspectives and that is the primary problem.

FTA:

"Back in 2011, although NPR's audience tilted a bit to the left, it still bore a resemblance to America at large. Twenty-six percent of listeners described themselves as conservative, 23 percent as middle of the road, and 37 percent as liberal.
By 2023, the picture was completely different: only 11 percent described themselves as very or somewhat conservative, 21 percent as middle of the road, and 67 percent of listeners said they were very or somewhat liberal. We weren't just losing conservatives; we were also losing moderates and traditional liberals."

Also FTA:

" Concerned by the lack of viewpoint diversity, I looked at voter registration for our newsroom. In D.C., where NPR is headquartered and many of us live, I found 87 registered Democrats working in editorial positions and zero Republicans. None."

NPR is a publicly funded outlet. And this is what the public is getting.

"I found 87 registered Democrats working in editorial positions and zero Republicans"

That's not the salient statistic, especially if no Republicans applied. You understand "application" is a part of the process, right?

D'you really think Republicans are applying left and right, and being discriminated against? Really?!?

Are lots of Dems applying at Fox News as well???

Turns out "truth-telling" is one of the job requisites.

No wonder no (R)s.

"lack of viewpoint diversity"

^
"Blacks really are genetically inferior" is an example of a viewpoint that's missing.

" That's not the salient statistic, especially if no Republicans applied. You understand "application" is a part of the process, right?"

Do you have proof that no Republicans applied?

More importantly though, if I'm in charge of NPR where part of the company's credibility lies in a diversity of viewpoint and I see 87-0 I'm sure as heck going to recruit some people with opposing viewpoints.

It's okay to look at this and say, "You know, this 25 year veteran raises some legitimate problems and for the sake of the NPR brand, these problems really should be addressed and corrected."

Have you applied and been denied? Has any republican been denied because they were republicans?

NPR needs more DEI programs obviously!

Perhaps an affirmative action program for hiring more maga flag waving truck driving maga maroons is in order here.

Or is it that maga maroons just don't want to work there because they CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH?

We need more studies!

I listen to NPR when I'm in my car. Honestly, I have no ---- idea what this thread is about.

The only politics I ever hear are factual reports about events of the day.

"Presently, NPR receives funding for less than 1% of its budget directly from the federal government"
