Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Thursday, April 04, 2024

A physically fit and healthy young woman who struggles with crippling depression, autism and borderline personality disorder will end her life with euthanasia. Zoraya has struggled with her mental health her whole life and currently has a 40-year-old boyfriend she loves and her two cats. She decided to end her life later this year after finding out about the method when visiting the doctors who apparently told her: "There's nothing more we can do for you. It's never gonna get any better."

" ... The Netherlands became the first country in the world to make assisted suicide legal in 2001. Since then, it's become an increasingly popular option. In 2022, there were 8,720 euthanasia deaths in the Netherlands " representing roughly 5% of all the country's deaths and up from 4% from the year before. In February, the 93-year-old former Dutch Prime Minister Dries van Agt and his wife were euthanized ... "

Not taking a stand on this particular case, but I do want to point out that late life healthcare seems more designed to suck the last $ from the patient as opposed to letting the patient die with dignity. I am not sure how beneficial it is to give someone an extra month or 2 with zero quality of life lying in a bed in an assisted living facility under drugs 24 hours per day.

"There's nothing more we can do for you. It's never gonna get any better."

That says far more about the doctors than the patient.

"... the doctors who apparently told her: "There's nothing more we can do for you. It's never gonna get any better."

They might be right, and they might not be right. She's young, and new and innovative therapies come to use every year. It might be a couple of years, or a dozen years, but I would bet that there will be improvements in therapies that could make her conditions livable.

There might even be some now with which these doctors are not familiar.

It's hard when the patient may apparently be in too difficult a mental state to make such decisions, but legally, in some places, has a right to do so.

Thank goodness

Life is more than just converting oxygen into carbon, stupid

We don't allow our pets to suffer but insist our loved ones have a protracted and agonizing death

If a terminaly or chronically ill person wants a dignified death over having their savings plundered by a health system, they should be free to do so without judgement from anonymous cretins

It's also a great way to get rid of undesirables.

Voluntary or involuntary "undesirables"?

First the press will romanticize suicide.

Then it becomes a contagion of death of "undesirables"

All of course administered by the state.

"Then it becomes a contagion of death of "undesirables"

George Floyd, Eric Garner, Breonna Taylor, Michael Brown.
Those kinds of undesirables?

"Voluntary or involuntary"

We're already seeing it creep from one to the other. A person who is clearly not of sound mind, whose health care provider doesn't want to waste any more resources on, has basically been told to FOAD.

Basically - that. And how far have they really tried? Consistent counseling? Have they gone a little more experimental, ketamine, mushrooms maybe?

28 is young, and there's a lot of opportunity ahead for change. Absolute failure of the system, and while I agree with a right to die for those with terminal illnesses, it sounds like all she has is terminally incompetent care.

Pretty sure George Floyd was already on his way to assisted suicide with all the fentanyl he was consuming before that ------- cop stuck his knee on him.

Weak. We currently don't have an anti-trans thread running, why not start another one of those? Dinger must be Jonesin'.

Pretty sure killing him even one day before his calendar date is...(checks notes)...murder.

Yep. Murder.

This is her choice and it should be respected. It doesn't matter what you think about her decision, it doesn't matter what your religion says either. She has a right to make her own personal choices and that is all that really needs to be said.

"Nothing can be done. Thoughts and prayers."

I really like the "it's a personal choice that should be respected, and that's all that should be said" argument.

"We currently don't have an anti-trans thread running, why not start another one of those?"

We could have a fun parallel argument here. Some people identify as dead inside, so why not make it routine to have our health care systems affirm that identity?

"Some people identify as dead inside"

Some people have dead fetuses inside.

Republicans still demand they carry the pregnancy to term.

Republicants and Connie Troll idiots should be first in line.

#24 | Posted by LegallyYourDead at 2024-04-05 10:17 AM | Reply

If the fetus is already dead inside, then Republicans should no problem euthanizing the parent. If someone is grieving the loss of a loved one, no one should ever question their choices.

#25 | Posted by sentinel at 2024-04-05 10:24 AM | Reply

In an ideal world, whole families would have the option to be euthanized together.

#26 | Posted by sentinel at 2024-04-05 10:28 AM | Reply

Just think of all the possibilities to make a better society. Problem children who refuse to conform and aren't gonna get any better could be separated before they experience or cause too much suffering. Elderly and diseased people could be put out to pasture, to maximize happiness for all. Other people who have behavioral problems but don't respond to corrective therapy can be educated on the optimal solution. No one should ever question their choices nor the professionals who help them realize what they really want.

We can also use this procedure to reduce the number of partisans, since we know partisans are inherently unhappy and depressed whenever the Other Party gets into power. Yay for moderates!

Young people choose suicide every single day around the world and they don't get headlines because they don't get a physician involved.

How many have offed themselves instead of being able to tell their parents they are homosexual due to the hate the chreestian right pushes over homosexuals?

This is Nuts.

A 28 year depressed woman needs treatment and help adjusting.

Not a Lethal injection.

Euthanasia is illegal in most places for good reasons.

She should have to do it herself. No assistance, No approval and encouragement for a stupid choice...

It's a self service world if you want to Die by your own hand.

Your life in many ways is not yours alone. Suicide is selfish and cowardly.

It should be prevented and discouraged, not enabled and ennobled
I'm not religious.in any way, but suicide is not something that should be Easy and Acceptable.

It's another Erosion of the respect for life, that so many think its just Swell..

#33 | Posted by Effeteposer

Please inform us when this "respect for life" existed.
Was it during the lynch mobs of Jim Crow South?
Was it during the Spanish Inquisition?
Maybe during the carpet bombings of WWII.
Maybe during the conquest of Genghis Khan.
