A LASER is Light Amplification through Stimulated Emissions of Radiation. The output is light - usually visible, but it may be infrared, or ultraviolet and not be visible. A CO2 laser emits in infrared, is invisible, and is one HOT beam.
The radiation used to stimulate the laser material (gas, is electromagnetic radiation, not nuclear, not alpha or beta, but usually light or radio frequencies.
A MASER is Microwave Amplification through Stimulated Emissions of Radiation. In this case, however, the output is not, visible light, or ultraviolet but microwave energy in the range of radio to infrared. This is always invisible to the human eye. It can also cook you in a peculiar way.
MASERs were the precursor to LASERs.
I have always thought that what we're seeing is a directed energy weapon of a specific frequency or series of frequencies, probably a MASER (which also can be more accurately called Molecular instead of Microwave) is the likely culprit. By varying the frequencies specific parts of the brain or other organs could be targeted with varying results.
But I digress. Vance is an idiot because invisible lasers are quite real and have been used for decades.
