Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) said she would "absolutely" not vote for former President Donald Trump in the 2024 election and is considering changing parties, according to CNN. Murkowski said that she is "independent-minded," but wouldn't say if she would switch to the independent party. "I just regret that our party is seemingly becoming a party of Donald Trump. I am navigating my way through some very interesting political times. Let's just leave it at that."

If Ms. Murkowski left the Republican Party, it would be welcome news for Democrats facing a brutally difficult map in the Senate elections in November. Three of their current seats are up for election in red states, and several more are up for election in swing states. There are almost no opportunities to pick up seats currently held by Republicans, and there's no room for error, given their very narrow majority.

Ms. Murkowski, who has served in the Senate for more than 20 years, has long been more moderate than many Republicans. Among other positions that are rare in her party, she supports abortion rights, and she has long been critical of Mr. Trump, including in voting to convict him in his impeachment trial after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

Based on her re-election in 2022, there is no reason Lisa should feel beholden to the Trump-helmed GOP. It would serve the GOP right if Lisa did decide to become independent and caucus with the Democrats after how viciously Trump went after her. And here's another reason why she's the moral opposite of Trump:
"With the exception of Alaska Natives and Native Peoples, most of us are daughters and sons of immigrants who came to this country to build a better life for themselves and their families," Murkowski wrote in a post on X. "Legal immigration from people across the world is woven into the fabric of American exceptionalism, and comments from the former president couldn't be further from the truth. This is more hateful, harmful rhetoric from Donald Trump that is poisoning our country."(from thread article - link in title)

Even if she leaves the GOP, my impression is that she'll continue to give the GOP control of the Senate.

I did that back in 2017 when her kind like McCain and Romney started sabotaging their own agenda, blocking Obamacare repeal, not funding border security measures etc. etc.

Good for her. Honestly, Alaska had some of the longest old school republicl0wns until Paloonietunes poo'd in the hot tub.

Frank Murkowski a decent guy turned the helm over to her to run for Governor. She took it back on her own

Ted Stevens pushed hard for the Native Hospital. (socialist) Permanent Fund (Socialism) Until widespread legalization, Alaska had legal weed, and during the short period that legalization was repealed, it had the most liberal weed laws in the nation. (libralism)

She voted for Obama's position over 70-ish percent of the time...

She did a couple of extraordinarily stupids... but overall mostly sane.

It's at least somewhat encouraging to see a few defections from the criminal lunatic the rest of their party idolizes. Eventually we'll reach a tipping point. But damn, the process is slow.
