"GPS is the most general excuse that is given by drivers that do hit the bridge," said Justin Smith, Lyndon's municipal administrator. He says the real problem is lack of common sense.

The bridge, built in 1878 and renovated in 1995, lies on a short cut motorists use to avoid downtown Lyndonville. The community, which has five historic covered bridges, including two that are in use, calls itself the "Covered Bridge Capital of the NEK," short for Northeast Kingdom area.

Police chief Jack Harris estimates the Miller's Run bridge has been struck two dozen times, and at least once, two times in one day. The drivers are using GPS programs for cars rather than commercial vehicles, he said. Typically the damage is cosmetic, though on two occasions the bridge had to be closed for several months for repairs, he said.

In 2019, a delivery truck hit the supports and the engineering and repair costs were nearly $100,000, said Smith. About half the time, the town recoups insurance money from the drivers " if it catches them. Many just drive away.

"They will claim that they didn't know they hit it and yet you'll see the truck stop in the middle of the bridge and they'll look up to see that they're hitting the bridge," Police Chief Harris said. "I can count the number that have stopped and waited on one hand," Harris said. ...

There's an old stagecoach road in Ohio that runs alongside Beaver Creek. I've ridden horseback along that trail many times.

At one time it must have been a toll road because the covered bridge still has some original signs that say "Horse & rider .10 cents.

Further up the trail are the remnants of an old stagecoach layover station. It must have been the equivalent of a Hilton Hotel in its day. It had a three-seater outhouse.

GPS has always required some common sense to use and there have always been known mistakes in it, such as Death by GPS or the Japanese tourists who drove into the ocean following their GPS in Australia as only a couple of examples.

You need to know what sort of GPS/map to use according to what you are driving. Cars, motorcycles, and commercial vehicles, all have different layouts and this damage to covered bridges is a result of people not knowing how to use the technology.

You'd think they would put up a sign "Low Clearance".
Might even get out there and measure it, and post a sign with the clearance.

The adopted criteria provide vertical clearance values for the various highway functional classifications (Table 19). These criteria are set to provide at least a 1-foot differential between the maximum legal vehicle height and the roadway, with additional allowances for future resurfacing.

Not lost on me, though, is the liberal desire to label (probably republican) truckers as placing the roadway "under threat". Yeah they're probably doin' it on purpose.

I drove moving trucks for years. I was always ultra careful about heights and underpasses and tunnels. I so didn't want to be that guy.
Squeezing a 24' box truck down a So. Philly side street while the old Italian ladies watch you from their stoop was enough excitement for me.

Those are some beautiful bridges and areas in Vermont. Nice ones in NH, too.

I got a huge barrel stuck under a metal railroad bridge in Oklahoma when I was a kid... it mighta been a wee bit tall and illegal. Got caught on the chains I had over the top of it.

Let some of the air out of the tires and pulled away from the stacked up traffic, right in front of the Troopers, but nobody stopped me, lol.

Pop-up barriers are the answer. The good ones will stop a semi going 90.

Just set a height detector, something overheight triggers it and pop! they stop. It's what they use at the national labs.

And since truck drivers tend to be Republicans, nothing of value will be lost most of the time.

Or, you know, just set up a steel beam about 50 feet in front of the bridge at bridge clearance height. Cheaper and less deadly, and if they keep going they won't hurt the bridge.

GPS is no excuse. Low Bridges nearly always have a warning sign in advannce, and often flashing lights as well. Rental Trucks generally require you to sign documentation pertaining to vehicle heights. The trusks I have rented show the vehicle height in a prominent place, like directly over the rear view mirror. NO excuse.

Any idiot can rent a Penske truck or drive a 2 axle flatbed. A class A license holder (truck driver) who damaged any bridge would be fired, un-insurable and un-employable.
Besides, who cares? We're not talking about Monticello. It's a rickety death trap built for a horse and buggy.
