Former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan said Monday that he decided to run for his state's Senate seat this year when Senate Republicans recently killed the bipartisan border measure after former President Donald Trump told them to block it.

More from the article...

... "It's why I decided to run for Senate," Hogan, a moderate Republican and Trump critic, said in an interview with MSNBC Live's Luke Russert at the network's inaugural live event in downtown Washington.

"Actually, I had never given any consideration to this race," Hogan said. "I'd said 100 times I didn't aspire to become a senator. I didn't need a job. I wasn't looking for another title, but three weeks ago on a Wednesday night, when I saw a real solution to secure the border and provide funding for Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan -- something that most of the Republican senators had said was, all those things were important, and they were told to vote against what they believed in -- it made me frustrated and angry enough to say, I think I'm gonna go down there and try to do something about this."

Republicans blocked the border bill, whose chief GOP negotiator was Sen. James Lankford, of Oklahoma, in early February.

Asked if he's surprised that Senate Republicans haven't been supportive of Ukraine, Hogan said that he doesn't understand this "new strain of isolationism in the Republican Party." He warned that if the U.S. doesn't help Ukraine now, it's going to put Americans in a much worse situation, adding that he also doesn't understand the "Putin sympathizers" in the GOP. ...

@#1

So it seems he is not a member of the Cult of Trump.

That brings two questions to the fore: will the Cult of Trump support him to gain the seat and then subject him to immersive ice-baths until he spouts their nonsense? Or will they opposed him?

To answer your question Lamp ... he won't receive mainstream support from Republicans. We've forced Romney into retirement, we don't need another one.

And I say that as trusting Susan Collins (who is a fantastic Republican) any day of the week over the likes of Hogan and Romney. I might not agree with everything she stands for, but at least I know where she stands.

Nice attempt (albeit, quite lame) at a dodge. Likely indicative that that current alias has nothing better to counter what it responded to.

JPW ... 2012 you guys trounced a guy who had his dog ride atop his minivan and bitched about binders. Needless to say Republicans lost that go around (you know putting up the civil candidate). Anyways, 2016 we hired an ------- and guess what?!? He won. Personally I'm glad now that he's getting rehired for the job of nominee again. And solely for the purposes of watching people like you become unhinged and burn cities down like only kooky leftists can. But this time, I'd imagine the military won't be as kind to you guys as you burn hard working people's businesses down.

Well yeah. All the racist, miserable, bitter losers known as MAGA weren't gonna stand by and let a black guy do better than them!

And solely for the purposes of watching people like you become...blah blah blah

Fantasizing about an illegal act all in the name of loving other people being miserable like it.

Hogan better search his past for weaknesses. Because if he doesn't find them, Trump & company will.

And . . . (so important) can he afford round-the-clock security for his family?

It's alright I'm sure we'll see him on TV January 2025 burning down some poor hard working immigrant's business shouting ThIs Is FoR DeMoCrAcY!!!

--------- is so proud of the fact that the Republican Party ran out one of the greatest candidates, and one of the best politicians I have known in the last 30 years.

I know Romney very well, and I would vote for him right now over every other candidate of the last 15-20 years. He was always the smartest man in the tin no matter what room he was in. He had actual decorum and respect for the office he held and the one he sought.

I've known every president this country has had since Nixon, and many of the candidates. That you strength cheer Romney's rejection and celebrate the ascendency of anyone else is just laughably ignorant.

Yes. I worked quite closely with him in the run up to the election.

#27 | Posted by ABH at 2024-03-05 01:29 PM | Reply

ABH, I didn't have a problem with Romney (voted for him in the 08 primary and for President in 2012) until he penned his op-ed demolishing Trump and then after Trump won had the nerve to ask the guy for a job. That to me was a rather classless move so spare me the lecture on how great Mittens is.

At least Paul Ryan stood by his guns regarding Trump and left for the private sector, that's something and someone I can respect.

#28 | Posted by Bluewaffles at 2024-03-05 02:27 PM | Reply

He wasn't wrong. And he never "asked" for a job. A reporter asked if he would accept a position and he said he would. He would have been sorely needed. I have worked with Trump off and on over the years. I don't actually dislike him as a person. People would be surprised to learn he is very different in person than in TV. HOWEVER ... . I do disagree with much of his policy positions, and I come from the Reagan era of republicanism. Where the President had decorum, manners, and complete respect the for both the office and the PROCESS of politics.

Romney showed his true, nasty colors in that exchange, I'm sure you remember it well.

#33 | Posted by snoofy at 2024-03-05 05:29 PM | Reply

I actually don't remember that exchange at all and it certainly wasn't me. I didn't care if anyone disrespected him. That wasn't my job.

But he was a great man and one of the few I've met that I was actually happy to cast a vote for.

Nobody who opportunistically decided he opppses a woman's right to abortion because his party shifted far right and set out to destroy American values is a great man.

But you do you.

I have come to realize some people simply won't ever understand how or why abortion is the cornerstone of gender equality and a free society. This ain't France.

What I remember about Hogan is that he wanted to send Maryland's national guard to DC on January 6, but was prevented from doing so for many hours:

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan said Sunday he still doesn't know why he couldn't get rapid approval to send his state's National Guard to the Capitol amid Wednesday's insurrection.

"All I know is that we were trying to get answers and we weren't getting answers. It could have been just the fog of what's going on," Hogan, a Republican, told host Jake Tapper on CNN's "State of the Union."

www.politico.com

He'd be a lot better Senator than anyone Trump will support, which is why Republicans in Maryland probably won't support him.

Hogan to leave office with high approval ratings intact, Gonzales Poll finds

The telephone poll of about 800 registered voters statewide was taken last week found statewide. The pollsters found 77% of Maryland voters approve of the job Hogan has done as Maryland's governor.

Despite being in an overwhelmingly Democratic state, Hogan - a moderate republican - has remained popular. With 81% approval among democrats.

That's 13 points higher than among republicans.

Maryland has a very unique electorate. The main industry in Suburban DC (which is most of the population) is the Federal Government. This really distorts reality. They tend to have employment security, retirement plans and are well insulated from economic ups and downs. The recessions barely make a blip in DC area housing prices. Everything is political. The local news is National news There is the political elite with scores of appointees and career civil service who register with the party that employs them, and switch parties when that changes. Then there are zillions of underpaid service industry worker bees who keep them all fed, watered, clothed and cleaned. It is a really surreal place to live.
