But teachers--don't you dare talk about religions other than Christianity, or homosexuality, or reading banned books, or birth control, or which bathroom students can use, or black history month, or immigration, and a bunch of other topics we didn't know were bad and evil...

"Two Iowa districts in recent years have approved arming their staff before later reversing their policies. Spirit Lake and Cherokee both opted not to go forward after EMC Insurance declined to cover the rural districts ahead of the 2023-24 school year if they proceeded with arming staff."

Yep...and that's going to be the reason why this won't happen.

Insurance companies are few and far between who will take on a school district anyway....EMC is one the leading carriers in that industry.

EMC hates guns. If a school wants to have a gun on the premises today...they want that gun to be held by a law enforcement professional who is working for the municipality...NOT the school.

Republicans are arming teachers who they accuse of grooming children

Friends don't let your kids grow up to be conservative. They suffer from brain rot

Arming teachers will cause way more accidental deaths than lives saved. The school resource officer is the way to go.

Is that because it's covered under the LEO's insurance policy?

What happens if a rogue teacher shoots uppity students?

Kids can get mouthy, some people have weak self control. Usually the same people who want lethal power over others.

This seems like a fairly stupid idea.

Russia has 400 laws that defend killing people. The GOP loves to imitate Russia.

Immunity, from what?
This isn't "Die Hard." Bruce Willis only hitting bad guys with bullets is a Hollywood fantasy.
Teachers trying to shoot suspects WILL shoot innocent people by mistake. Do parenbts in Iowa want to immunize teachers from their (certain) bad aim?

-Is that because it's covered under the LEO's insurance policy?

exactly...the school would be successfully transferring the civil risk to the LEO and their department.

At least EMC can live with that....but not having an employee of the school be armed. That scares the hell out of them.

EMC used to write most of the community colleges in Kansas until Kansas starting allowing conceal and carry on college campuses.....they non-renewed the entire book of that once that happened.

"The school resource officer is the way to go."

a school resource officer that's technically in the employ of the local city or county law enforcement.

Armed teachers and schools doing live shooter drills - what happens to america when conservatives get their way.

If teachers were armed you'd see far more instances of guns stolen by kids, psychotic teachers misusing their guns, etc than you would see defensive uses of guns. Here's hoping we never actually have to see that happen.

kind of ironic that the greedy insurance companies represent a huge obstacle to the extreme right wingers getting what they want.

#13 That's because current day Republican orthodoxy is so extreme that it's even too much for capitalism.

I own a scary black rifle and several handguns.

I've received a fair bit of training in both.

If I'm ever in public and see someone with an AR there's no way in hell I'm even attempting to engage that individual.

Expecting teachers to do the same is wanna be Rambo s^%# that's meant to avoid the actual topic.

Also, any teacher that thinks they're capable of doing so with a handgun isn't a teacher I want my son sitting in class with. I want a teacher with realistic expectations will lock the door, turn off the lights and, if possible, get the kids the f^%# out of there through a window.
