Mitch McConnell announced on the Senate floor that he will step down as leader in November. "It's time for me to think about another season," McConnell said. "After all this time I still get a thrill stepping into the Capitol... It's time for the next generation of leadership."

Bye bye

Now, the GOP will come up with someone even worse.

it was either step down or fall down.

"Their relationship has essentially been over since Trump refused to accept the results of the Electoral College. But the rupture deepened dramatically after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

McConnell assigned blame and responsibility to Trump and said that he should be held to account through the criminal justice system for his actions.

McConnell's critics insist he could have done more, including voting to convict Trump during his second impeachment trial. McConnell did not, arguing that since Trump was no longer in office, he could not be subject to impeachment."

We would have a different country now had he done so.

The last person he beat out for the job was Rick Scott aka Skeletor, God help us.

Wow. A Republican with real common sense!

Obviously a dying breed. Literally.

So long Moscow Mitch.

You were an obstructionist piece of ---- but whatever piece of garbage dementia don will demand will be even fkg worse.

Like him or not, McConnell's political acumen is respectable. An effective lawmaker who's impact will continue into the next generation, long after he's dead.

I saw McConnell as the last voice of any reason in the Republican party. I expect Johnson to go full MAGA without McConnell's leadership.

As ironic as it is for me to say, I wish he'd keep the position for a while longer, after the election.

But he was losing influence anyway.

Rest in Hell McConnell...
I'm sure the Reaper will be along soon.

When I think on all that is wrong with America,
images like Mitch McConnell come to mind.

Now if ONLY the GOP would show a modicum of
COMMON SENSE and appoint someone who is willing
to negotiate, and serve the INTERESTS of the COUNTRY...

they won't...

McConnell is another RINO in the party of MAGA.

He is responsible for today's dysfunctional GOP.

I doubt he would have won his reelection.

That's one way to avoid endorsing a fat orange criminal insurrectionist. Any minute now Der Dotard will propose as his replacement JD Vance, Plumberbutt Mullin or Tom Cotton, boot-licking toadies all, and none able to provide leadership to a late-night raid on a kitchen refrigerator..

As bad as he was, I believe the replacement will likely be worse. It will be someone vetted and approved by the Trump faction.

I can see a Constitutional crisis coming in Kentucky...

With Mitch McConnell leaving office before his term ends, this will now create a situation in Kentucky which may have to go to the Supreme Court to resolve. The Republican-controlled state legislature has passed a law which requires the Governor to appoint a Republican to replace McConnell, should he die or leave office before his term ends. The Democrat Governor, Andy Beshear, has already stated that he feels that the law is unconstitutional, but that he deferred taking any action until it became relevant. Well, that's now the case. Let's see what happens in November after McConnell steps down.

Incorrect Ocuser, Mitch will serve out the rest of his term. He just will not be the leader of the GOP in the Senate.

Coward was too worried about his political future to save the nation from trump, and now he gives up on his political future.

McConnell said he's serving out his term until 2027. He's only stepping down from his leadership position.

You're correct. I misunderstood the headline and didn't read far enough to where that was made clear. Of course, there are still two more years left in his term, so this may still become an issue before it's over.

FTA:

President Joe Biden, who has had a productive working relationship with McConnell, said he was sorry to hear the news.

"I've trusted him and we have a great relationship," the Democratic president said. "We fight like hell. But he has never, never, never misrepresented anything.

That's nice. But what he did to take over the SCOTUS, and much of the rest of the federal court system, was some pretty slimy crap.

Did Brasheer sign it? Or was it one of these lame duck session bills passed after Brasheer won but was not sworn in yet.

Typical GOP scumbag maneuver to pull something like this.

I agree. This is probably not a good thing. Another maga Mike will make the Senate just like the house. Deadlocked. And Trumpy and his minions know this. And you can always count on republicans to do the absolute wrong thing. It seems Trumpy is doing everything he can to weaken Congress.

"I've trusted him and we have a great relationship," the Democratic president said. "We fight like hell. But he has never, never, never misrepresented anything.

Except for that whole thing where he said it wasn't fair for democrats to appoint a SC judge right before an election, and then did exactly that for republicans.

And that thing where he said trump should be held accountable by the legal system not the political system, and then worked to help trump avoid the legal system.
