Nearly 30,000 firearms have been stolen from motor vehicles in Tennessee in the decade since Republican lawmakers voted to allow gun owners to keep their weapons in their cars and trucks without any penalty for those who leave them unsecured, a NewsChannel 5 analysis has discovered. In 2022 alone, the most recent year for which statewide numbers are available, data from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation shows that more than 5,000 guns were stolen from motor vehicles, in many cases putting them into the hands of dangerous individuals who are not legally entitled to possess firearms and are likely to commit other crimes.

The NRA/GQP couldn't be happier with these results.

I can't agree with that. Sounds a bit extreme.

But can you agree that if have a deadly weapon you are responsible for that weapon? And NOT maintaining control of or securing your deadly weapons that is negligence? And if someone is harmed by your deadly weapon because you did not secure it properly it is criminally negligent?

The parents of the mass shooter in Florida are about to find out.

Cry me a river.

If you leave valuables in your car, eventually they're gonna get taken.

Taking responsibility shouldn't be that hard. Especially for things that can kill you.

I bet you 99% of these gun owners who got their guns stolen will tell you that to protect themselves from crime is why they had guns to begin with.

Now they're out there facilitating crime.

Why not just leave loaded guns lying around on park benches? That's perfectly legal, right?

Definitely people who think it's okay to leave guns in their car, then get their guns stolen, then need to buy more guns to protect themselves from their own guns that they let get stolen.

Why are you going to bat for irresponsible people who allow their firearms to be taken by criminals? You're an -------.

#17 | Posted by snoofy at 2024-02-04 03:30 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

I always read, right here on the DR, that the reason we need guns is to protect ourselves from criminals with guns.

That. If all law abiding citizens were to relinquish their firearms, only the criminals would be left with firearms.

But. Here we have proof that the reason criminals have guns is because law abiding citizens are providing the criminals with guns.

The republican response, provided by our very own Sitz. It's no one's fault these guns were stolen but the criminals who stole them. Go buy newer, better guns.

Apparently gun owners have zero obligation to be responsible with their firearms. Store them somewhere criminals and children can't get access too. Like in a gun safe.

I'd call him re tar did. But then he'd probably shoot me.

You're a frigging idiot, as usual on gun threads.

Using your "logic", if I had a gun in my car and one on my person, you'd be all for me shooting someone I caught breaking into my car. After all, I couldn't "allow" someone to steal my gun.

If these unsecured firearms are used to commit crimes, the reckless owners should be responsible for civil damages.

Which dovetails nicely into requiring firearms insurance when you allow your gun to be taken outside of your residence.

In states where people have the good sense to consider locking up guns a no-brainer, leaving your firearm lounging around unsecured isn't just a bad idea"it's flat-out illegal. So, really, the first one playing the villain here isn't some mysterious thief; it's the gun owner who thinks their vehicle is a suitable storage spot.

Funny how that works, eh?

Whoops!

Who in the world can you possibly say I am going to bat for here.

If I leave a gun in my car, and it gets stolen, I am going to bat for the criminals, by providing them with easy access to a gun.

Making it easy for criminals to get guns is a stupid thing to do. Stop defending it.

"CAN YOU IMAGINE THE FAUX "NEWS" OUTRAGE IF THIS HAPPENED IN CALIFORNIA?????"

States with common sense secure gun storage laws also reduce youth gun violence dramatically (with households that lock firearms and ammunition seeing up to 85% fewer unintentional injuries). States with storage laws also make for better safety practices, with researchers finding they reduce accidents, injuries and deaths in young people.

And I bet if your children can't access them it also makes it harder for criminals to steal them from you.

Win win!

Re 29.

It's a common tactic of maga republicans. Try to get you to argue against a strawman statement they just made up to try and deflect the thread from the actual topic. Especially when they have no actual argument. They love to use it in death penalty debates, too. It's also an attempt to invoke and appeal to emotions instead of logic.

A huge percentage of the guns carried and used by convicted felons were stolen from cars. I joke that if the apocolypse came, I could find all the guns I need to outfit a militia in one apartment complex parking lot. Passing laws that require guns to be stored securely (and enforcing them) is the FIRST thing that needs to be done to stem gun violence.

People being irresponsible with their firearms, leaving them where they can be stolen. Is the same as someone getting raped.

The sheer amount of stupidity it took for you to make such a statement is astounding.

Everyone who had their guns stolen should be fined.
