In South Dakota these children would have been dragged to teh gravel pit and shot and the governor would have ice cream later.

The headline from the cited article...

Ice cream truck hits huge group of school-children after driver left handbrake off

So, a human error.

This is why you get a ticket in California if you don't have your wheels turned the right way when you park on a hill.

Obviously mostly just generates revenue now, but relying on a car staying in gear 100% of the time is the kind of thing people need to have a rule for, or they won't do it.

I almost never set my parking brake. Maybe if I was parked on a hill I would think about it.

These children, did their parents cheer for 9/11? Asking for a friend.

@#3 ... This is why you get a ticket in California if you don't have your wheels turned the right way when you park on a hill. ...

One time a few years ago, I parked in the lot of a local post office.

My car has a manual transmission, and I left it in neutral.

But I did pull up the parking brake.

Well, that was not enough.

After a number of years, the cables of the parking brake had become, I'll describe it as, useless.

The parking brake did not work.

When I came out of the Post Office, I noticed my car was not where I left it, but touching a car across the lot.

I left a note on that car giving my contact info, explaining what happened.

I was never contacted (there was no damage to the other car).

Now, two things have occurred. The service department at the dealer has fixed the parking brake. It now works.

I also put the car in gear (usually first gear) when I park it.

So now, the car does not move unless I want it to move.
