Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

The White House: Earlier today, Iran--and its proxies operating out of Yemen, Syria and Iraq--launched an unprecedented air attack against military facilities in Israel. I condemn these attacks in the strongest possible terms. At my direction, to support the defense of Israel, the U.S. military moved aircraft and ballistic missile defense destroyers to the region over the course of the past week. Thanks to these deployments and the extraordinary skill of our servicemembers, we helped Israel take down nearly all of the incoming drones and missiles.

I think a point has been made.

President Biden may talk softly because it's not his nature to parade around bellowing like a bull (like the former guy) but it's guaranteed that he still carries a very big stick.

The Empire managers are out early today.

President Biden did a beautiful thing on Saturday.

He prevented both Israel and Iran from escalating their war to the point that would eventually drag the United States into the conflict.

He told Iran to shut up and sit down and he told Israel that the U.S. would support their defense but would not support their offense.

As an aside, President Biden also prevented Iran from interfering with the peace accords currently being brokered by the U.S. between Israel and Saudi Arabia which is a spike-sized thorn in Iran's side.

Funny, Israel blew up a consulate.

Iran responds by targeting military installations.

Can't say that Israel looks good in this exchange...

I get what you are saying. My "except" is they blew up a consulate to eliminate a general who was helping Hezbollah and Hamas who they are currently fighting so there's that.

The U.S. telegraphed more or less exactly what Iran was going to do via extremely good intelligence (reminiscent of the lead up to the invasion of Ukraine). It undoubtedly played a huge role bringing Jordan, Saudi Arabia and likely other Arab states into active and public armed action in defense of Israel. It positioned and deployed U.S. anti-ballistic destroyers and aerial assets to itself shoot down roughly a hundred of the estimated 300+ aerial devices Iran launched at Israel. Together, Israel, the U.S. and various allied Arab states took down 99% or more of all those devices. Iran launched a massive aerial bombardment and virtually none of it got through. And now the U.S. has managed to get Israel not to launch an immediate and inevitably escalatory retaliation.

It goes without saying that no administration works on its own. It comes to the game with the world's most powerful military and major power status. It's operating with Arab allies who have been gravitating toward a de facto anti-Iran alliance with Israel for years. And yet, anyone who knows anything about foreign or defense policy knows that most of it is all the endless number of things that can wrong and the one or two ways they can go right. Navigating the last week to this point today is a tour de force of international crisis management for the Biden White House.

Josh Marshall

And do you know what? The Biden Administration isn't sending ----------- out crowing about what at this moment appears to be a world class threading of the needle. The reason why not is that this situation is still very fluid and it's obviously not time to start spiking footballs in celebration.

However, I am going to keep mentioning that I find it more than curious - and a tremendous disservice to all Americans seeking to gain a fuller factual perspective from our media sources - that the statement released through the Iranian mission to the UN has received virtually no attention nor publicity when it alone clearly let's the West know that Iran had no asperations for a wider conflict with Israel:

Permanent Mission of I.R.Iran to UN, NY
@Iran_UN

Conducted on the strength of Article 51 of the UN Charter pertaining to legitimate defense, Iran's military action was in response to the Zionist regime's aggression against our diplomatic premises in Damascus. The matter can be deemed concluded. However, should the Israeli regime make another mistake, Iran's response will be considerably more severe. It is a conflict between Iran and the rogue Israeli regime, from which the U.S. MUST STAY AWAY!

6:06 PM Apr 13, 2024

To me, the above statement set the foundation for allowing the repulsion of Iran's attack to be the end of open hostilities - at least for now. The cooperation of Arab countries helping Israel repel this attack would likely cease should Israel launch another attack on Iran after already bombing their Damascus consulate - regardless of the validity of their reason why.

I get that.

But it just seems that Israel is giving the entire world the middle finger and are basically setting their own norms and rules while expecting everyone else to follow the old norms and rules.

I'm sorry, but Israel isn't worth blowing up the entire world.

""I am going to keep mentioning that I find it more than curious"

If you can't say it, Tony, I will. I'm used to the abuse. When it comes to foreign policy regarding any land between Morocco and India, Israel and its fundamentalist Christian and Zionist supporters have a near monopoly on the megaphone currently in the hands of the vast majority of American mass media outlets and legislating politicians.

This is readily apparent when one views, from an objective, non-partisan viewpoint, the unique intersection of interests between the Democrat and Republican parties, currently engaged in a cold Civil War.

In effect, IRAN thwarted its own attack, and for a very coherent and logical reason, and if no one other than Al Jazeera wants to explore that reasoning, then I am afraid we are not better than the denizens of those authoritarian countries around the world who resignedly accept their leadership's explanations for everything that occurs outside of their country/state/county/neighborhood/living room.

"President Biden did a beautiful thing on Saturday."

Let's hope it works. But unfortunately Nutty Yahoo is still making the decisions and as we know his decisions and choices have not been very good.

I have a feeling Israel will (like the US does) will do the exact wrong thing and squander any PR progress it has received from Iran's feckless attempts at attacking them.

#12 | Posted by donnerboy at 2024-04-15 11:17 AM | Reply

DONNERBOY

No doubt. The news just reported that the hardliners in Netanyahu's council are urging him to "go crazy" on Iran.

At the same time President Biden is urging Netanyahu to exercise restraint.

Netanyahu is peddling backward with the usual, Israel will pick the time and place, yada, yada, yada.

We'll soon see if your predictions about blowing op their new PR comes true.

Since Netanyahu's job has been hanging on a string lately, I have a feeling that whatever decision he makes will be guided by that . . . and also what side Saudia Arabia will take in the ongoing peace negotiations.

Just as a side note: Some posters (not you) are conflating Israel>>Gaza>>Palestinians with Israel>>Hamas>>Iran. Even though loosely linked, these are two separate issues and should be judged accordingly by this panel.

Iran had to respond after Israel attacked a consulate.

Their response was intentionally designed to send a message, not to do real damage. They know what can be shot down, they know what it takes to overwhelm the "iron dome", they have the capability to do it. It would behoove Israel to STFU, take the L, and keep their hands in their pockets.

Interesting perspective.

How about this one?

Israel blew up a consulate killing several important Hamas leaders.

Iran responds by targeting military installations with hundreds of drones and missiles but only managed to injure a little girl.

Can't say Iran looks very good in that exchange.

Israel blew up a consulate killing several important Hamas leaders.

They clearly knew where they were.

You make it sound like it was a necessity to hit them at a consulate.

Can you name another instance of a country bombing a diplomatic site for military targets?

www.nytimes.com

Amina al-Hasoni, 7, was clinging to life " the sole serious casualty of the Iranian barrage. And were it not for systemic inequities in Israel, her relatives said, maybe she, too, could have been spared.

Doesn't change the fact military installations were targeted.

It would make the political machine that much larger.

Reuters reported that according to a source in the Turkish government who wishes to remain anonymous (take that for what it's worth) that the Biden admin set parameters for Iran on the attack, presumably to minimize damages.

Iran is the master of minimally lethal Warfare.

They CHOSE to make this attack big and ineffective.

It shows a restraint the Israeli's totally lack.

It actually makes Israel look like ----.

If they wanted to... Iran could have killed many people.

Israel NEVER acts this way.

They almost always go for the jugular straight off.

They're Barbaric compared to the Iranians.

I base this on their behavior, not the ranting the Iranians sometimes do.
