US expects Iran to carry out direct attack on Israel

The US expects that Iran will carry out strikes against multiple targets inside Israel in the coming days and is prepared to help intercept any weapons launched at its ally, sources tell CNN, as the Biden administration is on high alert for what could be the eruption of a significantly volatile and unpredictable period in the Middle East. President Joe Biden on Friday predicted that Iran's attacks were coming "sooner than later" and sought to once again issue a stern public warning, saying that his message to Tehran was simply: "Don't."

A direct attack on Israel by Iran would be a mistake. However, an attack on an Israeli diplomatic presence outside of Israel would be a more likely response to Israel's attack on Iran's embassy in Syria. There is a good chance that retaliation by Iran on a Israeli diplomatic presence outside of Israel will not draw America into the conflict in a more direct and sustained way.

IMO, the Israeli attack was a deliberate attempt by Netanyahu to extend his leadership. It also has the potential of drawing America into the conflict. Such intervention by the US would certainly have political consequences; especially in an election year. Biden would be very wise to tread lightly here. He could potentially lose a non trivial portion of his base if he makes the wrong move.

Let's hope that any retaliation by Iran or its proxies is outside of Israel.

... or maybe the US kept it's reporting ambiguous in order prevent the exposure of some possible intelligence sources?

My guess is that the US was a lot more specific in their discussions with Israel and other allies compared to what the US was saying publicly.
