... A Florida-based lobbying group, the Foundation for Government Accountability, which has fought to promote conservative interests such as restricting access to anti-poverty programs, drafted or lobbied for recent bills to strip child labor protections in at least six states.

Among them is Indiana's new law enacted in March, repealing all work-hour restrictions for 16- and 17-year-olds, who previously couldn't work past 10 p.m. or before 6 a.m. on school days. The law also extends legal work hours for 14- and 15-year-olds.

Indiana legislators sparred over the bill, with state Sen. Mike Gaskill (R) saying at a hearing in March, "Do not for a second think that this is about the evil employers trying to manipulate and take advantage of kids." But state Sen. Andrea Hunley (D) called the bill an "irresponsible and dystopian" way of "responding to our workforce shortage."

In Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) signed into law changes that allow 16- and 17-year-olds to work seven days in a row. It also removes all hour restrictions for teens in online school or home-school, effectively permitting them to work overnight shifts. ...

Multiple Jersey Mike's in Virginia cited for child labor violations, paying over $100,000 in penalties (March 20, 2024)

... Four northern Virginia Jersey Mike's franchise locations have been cited for allowing more than a dozen employees under the age of 16 to perform dangerous tasks and work longer than permitted in violation of federal child labor regulations.

According to officials, the Charleston, South Carolina-based operator violated the Fair Labor Standards Act at locations in Ashburn, South Riding, Springfield, and Sterling by allowing 14 minor-aged children to operate power-driven meat slicers, a hazardous occupation under federal law.

Officials say the operator employed minors to either work more than eight hours on non-school days, more than 18 hours during a school week, more than three hours on a school day after 7 p.m. between the day after Labor Day and May 31, or after 9 p.m. between June 1 and Labor Day, all child labor violations. ...

In deference to the supposedly fierce spirit of "worker independence," Project 2025 would also like to see many more workers classified not as employees at all but as independent contractors. And what would such workers gain from that "independence"? Well, as a start, freedom from those pesky minimum wage and overtime compensation regulations, not to speak of the loss of protections like disability insurance. And they'd be "free" to pay the whole tab (15.3% of their income) for their Social Security and Medicare taxes, unlike genuine employees, whose employers pick up half the cost.
- FTA

I am not sure "Republicans are still passing laws for more child labor." is accurate. While CA AB5 was meant to bring workers into companies, its turned out the workers had to go "independent", ie "worker independence".

Because this is exactly what CA did with AB5. Everyone now has to become an independent contractor, and now can work for lower than min wage, being a minor is ok too, losing disability insurance, plus 15% of social security and Medicare.

US had a good system now both sides have destroyed it.

If really makes you and speaklies feel better, I'll swith parties.

How'd that be?

I'll start voting in a democratic primary that generates a candidate I'll like but won't have a chance in a general election against any republican with a pulse.

And I'll forego voting in a primary election that decides who will represent me.

That's 1 less vote for school board, city council, county commissioner, state rep and state senate for the most sane republican in the bunch.

these are elections decided by very few votes often times....so switching parties actually helps the republican party place the more extreme candidate in power to represent me.

But that's okay.....I'll give it up so I can say I'm a democrat and vote in elections that absolutely don't matter at all.

Is that what you want me to do?

but that would mean you and speaklies have to stop saying "your party your party your party your party"

Then you'd be mutes. You'd literally have nothing to say to me.

Is that what you want? You really want me to take that away from you?

Money that they will likely save if fmr Pres Trump is re-elected and gets to pass his tax-cuts for billionaires.

So, their campaign contributions to fmr Pres Trump seem to be lees for political purposes, but merely more of a return on investment (ROI). That is, they hope to recoup more money via reduced taxes than they gave the Trump campaign.

Of course, there is always the issue of fmr Pres Trump using donations to Republicans effort for his personal legal efforts...

And the GOP does not wish to let them retire by pushing up SSI retirement at the same time. As a blue collar worker, I really do think we need to examine SSI retirement for certain classes of the workforce. A banker(ster) or Lawyer can work until they are dead...see the SCOTUS, while a painter climbing a ladder 8 to 10 hours a day cannot. Yet, hard working labor intensive workers are expected to do the same time as a paper pusher? This is just discrimination if you ask me and I can think of only one of my male blue collar relatives that managed to collect any of their SSI as they kicked off right as they retired at 65-68.
