What a cool dance track, and their original concept video is really fascinating. What is that ending about?

Who Invented Rock and Roll?

That's a pretty good breakdown of how Rock and Roll came about technically.

But Chuck Berry did more to innovate and popularize it than, oh say, Jimmy Preston.

This was posted on yt a few minutes ago... its a Rockabilly pre-cursor to R&R

www.youtube.com

"Be-Bop-a-Lula" is a rockabilly song first recorded in 1956 by Gene Vincent and His Blue Caps.
In early 1956, Gene Vincent performed the song on a radio show in Norfolk, Virginia, and recorded a demo version which was passed to Capitol Records, who were looking for a young singer to rival Elvis Presley.

Capitol invited Vincent to record the song and it was recorded at Owen Bradley's studio in Nashville, Tennessee on May 4, 1956. Cliff Gallup (lead guitar), "Wee" Willie Williams (rhythm guitar), "Jumpin'" Jack Neal (string bass), and Dickie "Be Bop" Harrell (drums) comprised the band.

When the song was being recorded, Harrell screamed twice in the background, he said because he wanted to be sure his mother could hear it was him on the record.

Now this is the first record I ever bought when I was a kid, and I saved up my pocket money for months, and then I took the bus down-town to the record shop, and I remember going into the back of the shop and listening to the record and loving it.

It was just very early days of rock'n'roll, so it was just such a thrill, and then I got back on the bus, went home and played it endlessly, and these memories, of Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps singing Be-Bop-A-Lula will stay with me forever."

Goree Carter - Rock Awhile (1949)

"First rock'n'roll with famous guitar intro later used in many rock'n'roll songs.

It has been cited as a contender for the "first rock and roll record" title and a "much more appropriate candidate" than the more frequently cited "Rocket 88" (1951).

Carter's over-driven electric guitar style was similar to that of Chuck Berry from 1955 onwards."

A banjo player is on his first date. The first course comes when he suddenly throws down his napkin, jumps up, and says, "Crap! I think I left my banjo in the car and forgot to lock the car," and rushes out of the restaurant.

Arriving at his car, his worst fears were realized when he sees the back window is shattered.

Someone had thrown another banjo in the back seat.

"While Graham Nash says that he never got to know Jerry Garcia all that well, their first meeting is a part of rock history: It happened in the fall of 1969, when Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young were recording their classic "Dj Vu" album, which included what is probably Nash's best-known song, "Teach Your Children."

At that first meeting, Garcia added an iconic, bluegrass-flavored pedal steel guitar solo " incredibly, he had only been playing the instrument for a few weeks " which it's virtually impossible to imagine the song without.

Here, as part of Variety's remembrance of Garcia on the 25th anniversary of his death, Nash shares his first and last meetings with Garcia, as told to Jem Aswad."

Yeah.

The current music I hear is quite good.

No way, though, I'm going to concerts as I did back in the early 70's to see, e.g., Pink Floyd performing on their "Dark Side of the Moon" tour.

Not a comment on the song, but more of a general comment on this thread...

Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you for starting this thread.

As you (and others) may have noticed, I had a bunch of tunes stored for such a thread.

I do apologize if my posts may have been too, I'll say, overwhelming.

There are so many tunes I like, and the sudden existence of a place to show those tunes, well, I may have been a bit exuberant.

Apologies are offered.

But, I will also say, this Friday Night Tunes really needs to be a regular thing...

An older friend saw a triple bill in a 1000 seat venue with Pink Floyd, ELP, and ?? (can't remember who the 3rd one was). What a bill!

BTW, an engineer friend of mine was Pink Floyd's chief sound engineer for several years in the late 80's & 90's. He had some cool stories.

As a young teenager, my first arena concerts were general admission (balcony, mezzanine, and floor) and cost $4, $5, and $6. I arrived hours early several times so I could get a good seat. Once they opened the doors you just found any seat in whichever level ticket you had. I watched some legendary acts from the 2nd or 3rd row. Good times!

So... what became of Rock and Roll?

Here's an early outdoor Rock Festival in a mostly unsuspecting Cincinnati, Ohio.

The Fuzz had a cordon in front of the stage, but that disappeared when Grand Funk Railroad opened the Festival.

"Traffic - live on Midsummer Rock, which was on a 90 minute TV show featuring Mountain, Grand Funk Railroad, The Stooges and Alice Cooper.

The festival took place on June 13, 1970 at Crosley Field in Cincinnati, Ohio, the home of the Cincinnati Reds baseball team. Broadcast in August 1970, it was never rebroadcast.

At time of broadcast it was simulcast in stereo by many FM radio stations."
