Gleefully proclaiming the joys of rock n' roll, drugs and sex in the streets, John Sinclair reigned as a nationally celebrated troubadour of youth rebellion during the psychedelic era, playing a lead role in making Detroit and Ann Arbor counterculture hot spots with the MC5 band, the White Panther Party, cutting-edge concerts and flamboyant rhetoric.

"For my generation, what Sinclair experienced and what he stood for remains strongly etched in memory. In 1969, after delivering two joints " barely enough marijuana to fit in a tablespoon " to an undercover cop, he was sentenced to ten years in prison. He was 28.

The severity of his sentence sent shock waves through the Boomer generation and drew high-profile attention.

Most dramatically, John Lennon wrote a song for him and performed it at a huge concert, dubbed "The John Sinclair Freedom Rally" at Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor in December 1971 as Sinclair listened, glued to a radio in his cell.

Three days later, after two and a half years, he was freed after the Michigan State Supreme Court ruled the state's marijuana laws unconstitutional."

John Lennon held a concert at the UofM to raise money to get him out of prison for possessing a joint.

gawwwwwd I remember when being busted for a joint could get you 10 years! There used to be a reason weed made you feel paranoid. I remember some friends and I were smoking a spiff out of the lid we just bought at this back alley hangout and the cops came. Everyone split leaving me holding the bag (literally) so I started trying to eat it because I didn't want to be caught with it. So, I had this mouthful of Mexican dirt weed... trying to chew and swallow it was making me gag... when the cops came up to me and asked me if I was sick. I was freaking out and nodded yes tears streamed out of my eyes. So they picked me up and took me over to a trash can so I could "barf". I made a show of it. One of them bought me a little coke to help settle my stomach... When they saw I was okay they (thankfully) let me go.

Good times.

... and boy how the world has changed.

Dang. You lucky dog!

No cop ever gave me any coke!

But here in Humboldt County now if someone tries to steal your weed the cops will literally bring it back to you if they catch em.

Now THAT there is progress!

College, 1980, SE US. $30/z = $113 in 2024 dollars. For 4 percent THC.

One of my dear offspring lives in a dispensary state and recently sent me 2 ozs. of 24 percent THC, pre-ground (I don't care about aesthetics, and those goddamn grinders are more trouble than they are worth).

Cost, w shipping = $103.

A 1 gram vape cartridge that is 90% THC that is certified mold and pesticide free costs $25 at my local dispensary.

A 1 gram vape cartridge can last me a month easy (if it doesn't clog up!).

First pot I smoked was at about age 14. It came in a penny matchbox and cost $5.

A friend of mine's older brother had a buddy on the local police force; my friend and I bought it from him in the middle of a pasture where he had pulled up his patrol car.

I didn't know we were buying from the Fuzz until we got there, and was sure it was a setup and that we were going to jail!

Texas also had people in prison sentenced to 10 years for a joint. We would have gone to Reform School at that age.... you know, to learn how to be real criminals.

I wasn't a regular user in high school. If someone else had some on a Saturday night ...

BTW, I read the book you suggested, "Lost City of The Monkey Gods." Very interesting and informative read. TY!
