Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Having recently arrived from Spain, Vitel had gone to her late mother's apartment, which had been unoccupied for approximately three to four months. According to police, she was viciously attacked by two squatters upon encountering them occupying the residence. The savage assault resulted in Vitel sustaining severe head injuries, multiple facial fractures, a cerebral hemorrhage, and two broken ribs, according to law enforcement. Vitel's 19-year-old son, after having not heard from his mother in 48 hours "opened the closet door near the entrance and found the duffel bag with a foot protruding."

I think we should wait to hear the squatters' side of the story.

If you want to start highlighting crime in NYC...

abc7ny.com

For example...

Suspect who killed NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller has 21 prior arrests: police

Bronx man charged in death of subway rider he pushed onto tracks in unprovoked attack: police

Search for suspect after man stabbed in buttocks on Upper West Side

It's almost as if letting criminals escape punishment leads to them committing more crimes. Who could have imagined such a result?

Yeah, there's that aspect.

But I suspect your comment is a mischaracterization of that discussion.

For starters, how are criminals allowed to escape punishment?

Defunding the police is a good first step. Then maybe elect criminal defense attorneys to be your DA. (E.g., DA Pamela Price ,DA (and child of convicted terrorists) Chesa Boudin.)

Also good to let criminals know that they can steal a grand a day without threat of facing significant punishment. Maybe tolerance of open-air drug use thrown into the mix and hilarity ensues!

@#6 ... Defunding the police is a good first step. ...

Yeah, I disagreed with that from the start.

The police should not be defunded.

But the Blue Wall of Silence, where "good cops" tolerate and hide the behavior of "bad cops," needs to stop. That's just one. I have others. But that would be a good start.

... Then maybe elect criminal defense attorneys to be your DA. ...

Sorry. I disagree. A good attorney should represent the client. Period. Full Stop. The client of the DA is the People.

Without specific examples, I'll dismiss that one.

... let criminals know that they can steal a grand a day ...

That's California, not NYC. That aside. It did not let criminals know they could steal a grand a day, it stated that certain crimes, previously categorized as felonies are now categorized as misdemeanors.

I mean, really, if you want to have a discussion, I'm all there.

But when your comment seems to grossly misrepresent reality, well, I've got better things to do.

From a PBS station:www.kqed.org
Basically the arrest rate dropped by over half after that law reclassified crimes below $1K to misdemeanors. Thus, the desire to undo portions of that law in the next election, even supported by Democrat mayors.

Its almost as if having 20 million people in a single metro area is going to produce higher levels of crime by raw numbers ...

Anyone notice this rise in "squatter" news?

At a higher level why? This has been happening for decades from what I am reading.

Why now?

Gaslighter thinks criminals are stupid.

low arrest rate, if arrested no bail back on the street.

It also a feedback loop (you do know what that is don't you?), police get tired of arresting same person. So they make less arrests.

Seems discourteous to fellow posters.
