... "President Biden proved time and again during his first term that he stands with working families," USW International President David McCall said in a statement on Wednesday. The union also endorsed Biden for president in 2020.

The formal backing comes as the USW looks to block Nippon Steel Corp.'s plan to purchase US Steel for $14.1 billion. The deal, announced in December, has drawn strong opposition from the union and prominent lawmakers.

Biden last week said US Steel should remain American-owned and run, a stance the union applauded. Biden has stopped short of explicitly pledging to block the deal, which is under review by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, known as CFIUS. ...

Why it matters: Typically, unionized workers earn about 10%-20% more than their nonunion peers, but these wealth gaps are far wider, an indication that the benefits of union membership accrue to workers over time. ...

@#5

I've never been in a union.

Because of my training, I've been in management.

fwiw, in part of my management training, I was a supervisor of a machine shop.

The night shift, i.e., 10PM to 7AM.

I hated it. I slept only six nights per week.

On the other hand, the crew on the shift were great.

One time, I walked around the area of my responsibility. In one of the remote areas I saw an employee sitting on the floor sleeping.

That's grounds for being fired on the spot. But I knew that he and his wife had just had a newborn.

So I talked to the shop steward. I asked the shop steward to tell that sleeping person that I wanted to talk with him.

A few minutes later, the shop steward came back and told me not to worry, the problem is resolved.

And for the record, the employee in question was a model employee for the rest of my assignment to that position.

Steelworkers union endorses Biden. Unions don't vote. Union members do.

Speaking of union workers:

My wife and I just drove (slowly because of traffic) several miles on backroads thru Nashville to avoid rush hour traffic.

We drove past a dozen large buildings under construction. Every crew spoke Spanish.

Tell me these contractors who might vote for Trump justify hiring foreign crews instead of Americans.

A contractor with a Trump bumper sticker in his back window was building a million dollar home two doors down told me a couple years ago. I asked him how he squares undocumented crews building his homes. "My subs hire them."

Uh, like he doesn't know. ---- hypocrite.
