Study: Suicide attempt rates are higher after surgery

Rates of psychiatric emergencies are high both before and after gender affirming surgery. Although both the phalloplasty and vaginoplasty patients have similar overall rates of psychiatric encounters, suicide attempts are more common in the later. In fact, our observed rate of suicide attempts in the phalloplasty group is actually similar to the general population, while the vaginoplasty group's rate is more than double that of the general population. Patients undergoing GAS with a history of prior psychiatric emergences or feminizing transition are at higher risk and should be counseled appropriately.

Gender surgery is a radical measure with a lot of physical issues post surgery. This study kind of eviscerates one of the biggest reasons why it's being recommended. If we truly want what's best for th3 patient it appears as if no surgery is probably the best cours3 of action.

What's the overall psychiatric health of these folks prior to their surgery?

Are you suggesting the surgery took an otherwise emotionally stable person and wrecked them?

The surgery is just 1 step in an otherwise long process, correct?

Can sum up this study pretty easily.

If you try to turn your -------- into a dick, you are less likely to kill yourself than before.
If you cut off your dick to turn it into a --------, you are much more likely to kill yourself.

The results of this study are pretty narrow. It only looks at attempted suicide rates approximately 2 years before and 2 years after getting reassignment surgery. It's just 1 in a puzzle.

I don't have a horse in this race, but I really wish both sides would get their ideology into something resembling coherence.

You got liberals that absolutely lose their ---- at the heresy of someone like James Damore a few years back suggesting some diversity goals are unattainable because men and women naturally have sexually dimorphic brains, and some of those differences manifest in differing interests and pursuits. Clearly the brain is not a gendered organ, and men and women are exactly the same - unless they're trans, in which case they're totally different, more like the opposite sex of the body.

Or conservatives. Still in the 1950's, men and women are completely different, and that's why men think logically, and women can't math or science, which is why they belong in the kitchen. Unless they're trans, in which case clearly the brains are the same, and physical sex is the only reality, not gender.

Could you two sort this out maybe? Mix and match until at least one of you has a full hand?
