Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Tuesday, March 05, 2024

By some distance, the research Emissions Analytics published in early 2020 claiming that tire particulate wear emissions were 1,000 times worse than exhaust emissions generated the most feedback of any subject we have tackled so far " feedback that was a mixture of surprise and scepticism. The headline conclusion we draw now is that, comparing real-world tailpipe particulate mass emissions to tire wear emissions, both in normal' driving, the latter is actually around 1,850 times greater than the former. Yes, in normal driving the ratio is almost double the previous figure for aggressive driving.

Quoting such ratios, however, needs careful interpretation. The fundamental trends that drive this ratio are: tailpipe particulate emissions are much lower on new cars, and tire wear emissions increase with vehicle mass and aggressiveness of driving style. Tailpipe emissions are falling over time, as exhaust filters become more efficient and with the prospect of extending the measurement of particulates under the potential future Euro 7 regulation, while tire wear emissions are rising as vehicles become heavier and added power and torque is placed at the driver's disposal. On current trends, the ratio may well continue to increase.

True that. My new vehicle will be 1000 lb heavier and 100 HP more than my current one.

What is a tire wear emission?

Also are there any standards for wear, with regards to pollution?

Seems like the opportunity for a tire company to introduce some. Also opportunity to create a longer lasting tire.

On a side note, why don't aircraft tires spin? Why have a stationary tire upon landing?

I have gone through more plane tires than car tires.

Why?

Cuz it's a different vehicle?

"What is a tire wear emission?"

It is 78% of microplastics in the oceans.

Keeping tires properly inflated is simple and can have a significant impact. Less fuel used and less usage of tires.

Check pressure when you get gas.

Search impacts of under inflated tires.

Ask the "Drill, baby drill" crowd, and they'll NEVER admit this would save more over the long term than ANY new oil reserve.

Telling and getting others to simply check their tire pressure every third time they get gas and asking them to tell others could have a significant environmental impact. It's an easy a difference maker.

*easy way to be a difference maker.

... comparing real-world tailpipe particulate mass emissions to tire wear emissions ...

Is "particulate mass emissions" the only type of tailpipe emissions that are a concern?

It should be the primary concern but politics haven't caught up to the science yet.

Right after you give up everything in your life that's touched by petroleum, in any form or fashion.

#13 | Posted by LampLighter

Absolutely not. It is really insignificant in comparison to green house gas emissions. Clean running vehicles emit little in particulate. That isn't to say that it is insignificant or not an issue just in comparison. When you look at modern vehicles in good running shape vs even 1980s vehicles there is no comparison. Diesels were and likely still are the worst.
