One day after holding a news conference at his church and defiantly denying accusations of sexual abuse, arson, theft snd other misdeeds uncovered by investigative journalists, a Kentucky legislator elected on a platform of racism, gun rights and Jesus shot himself to death Wednesday on a bridge not far from his home. It was a dramatic end for Danny Ray Johnson, the self-proclaimed Pope of the Heart of Fire Church southeast of Louisville.

Around 3:25 pm Eastern time Tuesday, a truck drove into a pedestrian and bike path in Lower Manhattan in New York City. The New York Police Department confirmed "several fatalities" and "numerous people injured." The truck continued along the path until it hit another vehicle, at which point the suspect got out of the truck bearing imitation firearms, according to the police. The suspect was then shot by authorities and is now in custody, police say. "Based on the information we have so far, this was an act of terror," New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a press conference hours after the attack.

Seriously, though, Trump's obsession with cable news is not healthy. For someone who claims he has tremendous public support, the talking heads on cable TV should be an inconsequential annoyance. He might find a better way to spend his time as the so-called leader of the free world.

When I saw the headline, I assumed it was from the Onion, because they often have headlines that say "Local man regrets choices he made in life" or something similar. I also thought of the classic Simpsons episode featuring Grandpa Abe Simpson shaking his fist at the sky in an unfocused rage. Only instead of yelling at clouds, Trump is yelling at CNN and MSNBC.

Whether out of boredom, disability, lack of a good hobby, or growing anxiety, a lot of old people do spend all day watching cable news. Fox knows this, and is consciously engaging in a psychological game with them by serving up a kind of media comfort food. The cynics who run the network cater to the bitterness that tends to encroach on people who are getting up in years, and it eagerly offers up bogeymen (immigrants, black people, poor people, Mooslims, Democrats, the supposed fake news media) to satisfy their need for someone to blame for everything that causes them discomfort in their dotage.

To people who feel like the world has passed them by and discarded everything they hold dear, Fox (and the Drudge Report, Breitbart, radio talk shows, etc.) the constant chatter about crisis, failure and lies that are portrayed as characteristic of the lefty do-gooders and SJWs offers them comfort that "finally, somebody understands me." This trust relationship between Fox and its viewers, though built on distortion, keeps the viewers coming back and ensures revenue for the network.
