Author Simone Weil starved herself to death to share the fate of French workers under Nazi rule. She criticized Marx and argues that both his analysis of revolution in terms of materialism and belief in its inevitability are bogus and harmful. She argued that already in 1933 a new development, rule by an army of managers, had superseded class war. Managers run industry, the state, and the unions themselves. This was true in the USSR, Hitler's Germany, and in the United States. Modern industry whose assembly line had separated, as Weil puts it, intellectual from manual work, now dominates social conditions. Industrial social organization has reduced the craftsman to a low-skilled minder of machines. The rich parasites who draw sustenance from industrial enterprises as shareholders really have no actual part in the enterprise itself. They have become a superfluous class. read more

Among Mueller's emails is this from Flynn: "Mike has been putting everything in place for us... this is going to make a lot of very wealthy people." How it is the building of nuclear plants in the Middle East "going make a lot of very wealthy people?" In Flynn's case, the money involved in the building 45 nuclear reactors in the Middle East would engage governments, corporations, and individuals, corrupt or not, in difficult-to-trace manners that would of course make some individuals very wealthy. But the project's will be done under the guise of "national security" to obscure any corruption. While Flynn has pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his conversations with the Russian ambassador, he has not pleaded guilty to taking bribes or laundering money. Perhaps it is the conjoined motivations of money and imperial power together that best explain the feckless general's brazen enthusiasm on inauguration day. read more

Humans emit more than 250 billion tonnes of chemical substances a year, in a toxic avalanche that is harming people and life everywhere on the planet. Industrial toxins are now routinely found in new-born babies, in mother's milk, in the food chain, in domestic drinking water worldwide. At the beginning of the 20th century infectious diseases like TB, pneumonia, and diarrhea were the leading causes of death. In the 21st century these causes of death have become chronic illnesses like heart disease, stroke, and cancer. The rise in chronic diseases corresponds with the rise in pesticide/chemical use. A Rand study states that 60% of Americans have one and 40% have multiple chronic conditions. Glyphosate, the most common herbicide, is linked to autism, inflammatory bowel disease, chronic diarrhea, colitis, Crohn's disease, obesity, cardiovascular disease, depression, cancer, cachexia, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and ALS, among others. read more

Democrats are fraidy cats who won't take their own side in an argument. Worse, they evince an air of fatuous goody-goodyness that serves only to distract attention away from the harms caused by the nefarious policies both parties favor. Nearly two-thirds of the electorate loathes Trump and the Republicans and their supporters who unaware they are being played. Trump and the party he nominally leads are playing with a weak hand. Israel meddles in our elections constantly. Congress and the MSM are in its thrall. Moreover, Netanyahu, is easily as apt a target for demonization as Putin. But, the 2016 election came down to a contest between goody-goodies and "deplorables." The way leading Democrats turned on Al Franken is a harbinger of where "the Schumer and Pelosi show" would like to take us. Schumer and Pelosi and the rest could learn a lot from Trump and the Republicans, about how to stick up for themselves and how, by doing so, to get their way. read more

President Donald Trump's decision Wednesday to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital has temporarily derailed the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, two senior White House officials acknowledged after Trump's speech. That "derailment" was a cost the White House was prepared to accept to fulfill Trump's campaign promise. And two senior White House officials said they felt making the announcement now -- before Israelis and Palestinians have reached the negotiating table -- would help mitigate the damage to the peace process. I never paid enough attention to this moron to know that this was a campaign promise. It is ridiculous, disgraceful and immoral for Trump to be making this declaration, as if it's his decision to make. It might even be illegal under international law. The catch there being that the USA doesn't care about international law unless it can use it to beat up on opponents, read more

You're right about prison & the S&L, I had listened to Bill Black talk about the 900+ prosecutions, which does not automatically lead to prison. But doesn't change the fact that there was serious investigations, prosecutions and prison after the Great Depression and next to nothing but a cover-up for the 2008 Great Recession. All three events were caused by control fraud and marketing fraud. So, perhaps, if more S&L Execs had gone to prison, the fraud-masters of 2008 would have thought twice, before destroying the global economy for personal gain.

New wealth is created by production and is the foundation for national wealth and power (until the military intervenes). Everyone in the USA enjoys economic advantages because of good will after WWII, Bretton Woods and our military. But that doesn't make a winning long term national strategy. The basis for Japan's success story is making better widgets. The basis for Japan's current economic stagnation is a financial system designed to mire the world in debt.

Is there any public benefit to updating and now renting Word? Is the computer or on line shopping more important than housing, cars, refrigerators or washing machines? I no longer get direct answers to my questions from Google, who constantly inserts paid irrelevant advertisers. It is impossible to rationally justify many stock prices based on sales, and no worse case than Amazon. There is both enormous benefits derived from our strong hi-tech industries and the next economic bubble that will create a few winners and millions of losers.

Flipping houses, stocks or bonds transfers wealth from one person to another. We live in a society which values the quick buck made by flipping when we offshore manufacturing and give flippers the lowest tax rate. This can only lead to the rise of China and demise of the USA. Yet this has been a deliberate national policy for a very long time.

If most people have any sense they will use their tax cut to buy down their substantial debts. But a larger paycheck should provide some short term benefit designed to help Republicans from 2018-2024, which was the point of making them temporary.

The stock market bubble is not a reflection of technological innovation, increased market share, or economic growth. It is a product of Federal reserve policy, which provides essentially free money to credit worthy Corporations which they use in stock buyback programs. These stock buybacks raise stock prices and trigger executive performance bonuses.

BLS economic reports are all based on "adjusted" numbers, which get "readjusted" a quarter later.

Current actual numbers are available at: www.shadowstats.com

CPI according to BLS: 2% CPI according to shadowstats: 6%
Unemployment according to BLS: 4.7% Unemployment according to shadowstats: 22%

What accounts for these differences? One example is all the people who are now collecting Social Security disability payments, because they cannot find a job that pays more or provides health insurance. If our Government dealt with its citizens honestly, Trump would never have ascended to the Presidency.

Regardless how money is distributed, at the end of the day, bookkeeping tricks mean less than real wealth production. Our GDP fails to distinguish between new wealth and speculation, which enriches one person by robbing another. On top of that unearned income in this country enjoys a lower tax rate than earned income for a long time, a trend which Republicans are accelerating.

Regardless which candidate you choose, the same detrimental trends persist, at a slower but steady rate under Democrats. Policy changes and economic impacts have a substantial time lag between cause and effect, blurring the public's understanding.
