LG Electronics Inc. 066570 -6.39% has told retailers it plans to raise prices on its laundry appliances following President Donald Trump's approval this week of steep tariffs on imported washing machines. "As a result of the trade situation, we will be initiating pricing actions, which will be sent under separate cover shortly," Thomas Yoon, an executive at the South Korean manufacturer, told retailers in a memo dated Wednesday and reviewed by The Wall Street Journal. Industry experts say they expect LG will raise published retail prices on at least some of its washer and dryer models by approximately $50. Washers and dryers are often sold in pairs. read more

The Trump administration will create a new conscience and religious freedom division within the Health and Human Services Department to ease the way for doctors, nurses and other medical professionals to opt out of providing services that violate their moral or religious beliefs. Specific details are scheduled to be announced Thursday. But the new policy appears to be broad and aimed at protecting health-care workers who cite those reasons for refusing to take part in abortions, treat transgender patients or participate in other types of care. Conservative groups praised the move Wednesday as upholding providers' right to religious liberty. read more

President Donald Trump's approval rating has ping-ponged between a low of 35% and a high of 45% during his first year in office -- the worst record of any of the most recent seven presidents, according to Gallup. Trump has incorrectly claimed that he has matched Obama's approval rating at the same point in his predecessor's presidency. But our analysis of Gallup approval ratings for the first 365 days of every presidency back to Jimmy Carter indicates that Trump is almost always at the back of the pack in the race for support from fellow Americans. Press "play" on the graph below or click the timeline at any point to see exactly how Trump's approval rating stacks up. read more

Donald Trump's quarterly report card is in -- and if he were back in school, he'd find himself on academic probation. More voters give Trump a failing grade for his first year as president than think he deserves an "A" or "B," according to a new Politico/Morning Consult poll conducted earlier this month. Trump's best marks come on the economy, jobs and fighting terrorism. But he gets poor marks for his handling of health care, the national debt and foreign relations. Overall, 35 percent would give him an "F" -- slightly more than the 34 percent of voters who would give Trump an "A" or "B" grade for his first year. The remaining voters give him a "C" (14 percent) or a barely-passing "D" (11 percent), and 5 percent have no opinion. read more

Millions more Americans were uninsured at the end of 2017, the first increase since the Affordable Care Act went into effect. The uninsured rate rose 1.3 percentage points to 12.2% last year, according to the Gallup-Sharecare Well-Being Index. That represents an increase of roughly 3.2 million Americans. Under Obamacare, the uninsured rate plummeted to a low of 10.9% at the end of 2016. Obamacare's exchanges opened in 2014, the same year Medicaid expansion began and the individual mandate -- which required nearly all Americans to have insurance or pay a penalty -- took effect. Those provisions helped reverse a soaring uninsured rate, which hit a peak of 18% in the fall of 2013, fueled in part by the aftermath of the Great Recession. read more
