There were still other more logically qualified candidates by that measure. Olympia Snowe? Condi Rice? Susan Collins? Susan Schwab? Elizabeth Dole? Kay Hutchison? Linda Lingle? Jodi Rell? Christie Whitman? Deborah Price? Kay Granger? Olene Walker?

But, you are right, Palin is more of a spark than any of the above would be. Couldn't have gotten a more attention-grabbing pick if he had tried.

James Danforth Quayle had a degree in PoliSci, and earned a Law Degree (while serving in the National Guard). He worked for four years in state government, four years as a US Representative, and eight as a US Senator. His JTPA bill was as substantive as anything John McCain has ever passed.

Sarah Palin has a sportscasting journalism degree from Idaho. She was mayor of a four-digit town, and has been governor of a state with a population smaller than 75 US counties for under two years.

Sarah Palin is no Dan Quayle.

The question is, will Todd Palin help out. When Mrs Palin ran for governor, the statement at the time was that Mr Palin would be spending more time at home. Instead, Mr Palin joined on with the oil companies, and has gone to numerous oil conferences (banking on his access to the governor). The later statement after that... not kidding... it was "the older ones are looking after the younger ones". Turns out the older ones were making younger ones, too.
