A little behind the times.
The very scripture they use makes clear there is no intercessor between man and God beside the one Jesus, who is the Christ.
Thus, the priests didn't even need this power granted to them, nor does one have to go to a priest to be forgiven of the "grave sin" of abortion or anything else.
Honest repentance and faith are sufficient. The Pope should have skipped the granting of power to the priests and just stated the last statement: "I can and must state that there is no sin that God's mercy cannot reach and wipe away when it finds a repentant heart seeking to be reconciled with the Father"
Forgiveness comes through Jesus, who is the Christ, according to their scriptures - not through man.
