Sen. Jim Bunning (R-KY) is already infamous for blocking a temporary extension of unemployment and COBRA benefits for out of work Americans. But included in that package is legislation to prevent a mandatory pay cut for doctors--and by standing in it's way, he's triggered a 21 percent fee reduction to doctors seeing Medicare patients starting today.

Earlier this month, the Transportation Security Administration, citing industry objections, announced that it would be scaling back security rules that apply to general aviation aircraft - what we think of as smaller planes.

As fate would have it for the beleaguered agency, less than two weeks later a suicidal pilot climbed aboard his Piper PA-28 general aviation plane and flew it into a building in Austin, Texas, housing IRS offices.

The Washington State Supreme Court delivered a haymaker to anti-gunners and strong reinforcement to gun rights advocates Thursday morning when it handed down an opinion in the case of State v. Sieyes that states bluntly, "We hold the Second Amendment applies to the states via the Fourteenth Amendment due process clause."

The tax-averse city of Colorado Springs, Colo., is about to learn what it feels like when budget cuts slash services most Americans consider part of the urban fabric. More than a third of the streetlights in the city will go dark Monday. The police helicopters are for sale on the Internet. The city is dumping firefighting jobs, a vice team, burglary investigators, beat cops and dozens of police and fire positions will go unfilled. read more

From behind the wheel of his hulking GMC Suburban, 76-year-old Otis McDonald leads a crime-themed tour of his Morgan Park, Illinois, neighborhood. He points to the yellow brick bungalow he says is a haven for drug dealers. Down the street is the alley where five years ago he saw a teenager pull out a gun and take aim at a passing car. Around the corner, he gestures to the weed-bitten roadside where three thugs once threatened his life. "I know every day that I come out in the streets, the youngsters will shoot me as quick as they will a policeman." McDonald was recruited by gun-rights advocates to lead a suit challenging Chicago's handgun ban that will be argued before the Supreme Court Tuesday. read more
