Not too long ago the age of consent in Mississippi was 13 years old. Go back further than that and there was NO age of consent in most states. No one is more hypocritical about sex laws than the US. Most of those great Americans who headed west in the Conestoga wagons were underage by todays standards, many in arranged marriages but today they are heros for their "conquering" of the west. I will believe that the police mobs that terrorized these kids were really interested in protecting them from child abuse as soon as the same police assholes start raiding the "Jesus Camps" of America. The fact of the matter is that our sex laws, which are impossibly biased against males to the point where a 17 year old male gets a 10 year sentence for having consensual oral sex with a 15 year old female (note that both were minors), are based on..............nothing but religious prejudices and not on any discernible facts.
The only peer-reviewed study on the effects of abuse that I know about showed that while the effects of physical abuse were long lasting and severe, the effects of sexual abuse were not measurable. I'm sorry I cannot provide a link to the study. Perhaps someone else can. The fact is that a researcher who wants to study the effects of sexual "abuse" on children is not likely to get funding simply because the "we all know" mode kicks in: "we all know" that adolescent sex is bad for children so we don't need to study it.
Consequently, this massive police mob action in Texas simply points out how a police agency can do whatever it wants with guns and judges. Next week it may be a synagogue for abusing kids by raising them as jews but, then, who cares?
