Campaigns & Integrity
An upstate New York congressional candidate seeks to right the Republican ship.
I do not live in New York's 23rd congressional district, and I've never hiked the Adirondacks, which run through it. I've never met Doug Hoffman, who is running for Congress there, and hadn't heard his name until fairly recently. But he's my guy this November. Since I'm not a constituent, my support for a candidate is about integrity, as it is in a few other races I'm following closely.

The Obama administration has attacked Fox News in order to prevent government corruption stories broken on Fox from bleeding into the other media, which are all-consumed with daily updates on Levi Johnston's Playgirl spread and Carrie Prejean's breast implants.

The signal to corporations is equally clear: You might have dealings with a federal behemoth that not only disburses more than $3 trillion every year but is extending its reach ever deeper into private industry finance, autos, soon health care and energy. Think twice before you run an ad on Fox.

At first, there was little reaction from other media. Then on Thursday, the administration tried to make them complicit in an actual boycott of Fox. The Treasury Department made available Ken Feinberg, the executive pay czar, for interviews with the White House "pool" news organizations except Fox. The other networks admirably refused, saying they would not interview Feinberg unless Fox was permitted to as well. The administration backed down.

On Tuesday, ABC News reporter Jake Tapper confronted White House press secretary Robert Gibbs over recent comments about Fox News. Tapper said, "It's escaped none of our notice that the White House has decided in the last few weeks to declare one of our sister organizations 'not a news organization' and to tell the rest of us not to treat them like a news organization. Can you explain why it's appropriate for the White House to decide that a news organization is not one?"

If views can be silenced by character assassination, the whole country loses.

To sue or not to sue? That is the question.

After racist statements were made up out of thin air and then attributed to Rush Limbaugh, these were the options he had.

It is easy for me to understand that these are not simple choices, because I have faced those options as well. Recently there have been a number of columns made up by others and put on the Internet with my name on them. The things said in those columns have nothing in common with anything that I have said, in my columns, in my books, or anywhere else.
