I know nobody will see this at this point but I got busy and couldn't get back in the thread.
Under certain very specific conditions, the range extender can drive the transaxle on the Volt.
FWIW... yes the Volt is a Delta II chassis, make no mistake it is a compact car. I would also agree I would have never paid 40-50k for mine. To the point, my wife and I looked at them new in 2010 and just balked at the price. I got my Volt as it came off a 24 month lease for $16.2k, and I feel that is a very fair price compared for what you get. I replaced a Toyota Corolla that was coming off lease with this Volt.
The Tesla 3 leaked pics I've seen put it into the same size class.
I have to tell you that, at least under the Chevrolet marque, this is the best built car they have IMO. The fit & finish is very above bar compared to their other ---- boxes.
Besides my MR2, I also own a 2008 Cobalt SS and its just an epic piece of ---- and everything that was wrong with "old GM". However... I love its turbocharged engine and suspension :)
Gen2 Volt will be much cheaper, not require premium fuel (that said, I run 87 in mine all the time... who cares). I'm also anxious to see the final Bolt, even though it has a retardo name.
Considering Obama got elected twice, I'm not sure why him doing a photo op in the car matters much. Certainly didn't cross my mind when I bought it.
