President Donald Trump has ordered the US military to take direct actions against Latin American cartels, including conducting operations on foreign soil. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has labeled Venezuelan President Maduro the leader of a cartel and is offering a $50 million reward for his capture. The New York Times reports, "President Trump has secretly signed a directive to the Pentagon to begin using military force against certain Latin American drug cartels that his administration has deemed terrorist organizations." A suspect who opened fire near the headquarters of America's public health agency blamed an apparent illness on the Covid vaccine, according to a report. The gunman, dressed in black and armed with a long rifle, began firing at the the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) building in Atlanta soon after 4.30pm ET (9.30 BST), shooting out windows and prompting a lockdown of the surrounding area. A DeKalb county police officer who responded to the shooting was critically injured and later died in hospital, police said. About two hours after the shooting began, the Atlanta police department said the gunman had died. The authorities said it was unclear whether he killed himself or was shot by police returning fire.

Taylor Adam Lee (22) of El Paso, TX was arrested on charges of attempted transmission of national defense information (NDI) to Russia regarding the operation of the M1A2 Abrams, the main US battle tank. In June 2025, Lee allegedly transmitted export-controlled technical information on the M1A2 Abrams Tank online and offered assistance to the Russian Federation, stating, "the USA is not happy with me for trying to expose their weaknesses," and added, "At this point I'd even volunteer to assist the Russian federation when I'm there in any way." In July, Lee met with an undercover Counterintelligence Agent whom he thought was a Russian officer and passed along the NDI. The defendant was subsequently arrested.
