A high-profile New York real estate lawyer, whose law license was once suspended, said he approached the judge presiding over Donald Trump's civil fraud case to offer unsolicited advice about a law at issue in the case. The judge, through a court spokesman, denied impropriety and said he was "wholly uninfluenced" by Mr. Bailey. New York's judicial oversight body has now launched an investigation into the alleged interaction, according to sources familiar with the matter.

FreedomWorks, the once-swaggering conservative organization that helped turn tea party protesters into a national political force, is shutting down, according to its president, a casualty of the ideological split in a Republican Party dominated by former President Donald Trump. "We're dissolved," said the group's president, Adam Brandon. "It's effective immediately."

The cost of extending the 2017 tax cuts enacted under President Donald Trump has expanded to $3.8 trillion over ten years, putting a massive price tag on what is likely to be a top issue in Washington next year, according to new estimates from Congress's fiscal scorekeeper.

Researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) have developed a high-performance, hybrid sodium-ion battery that charges rapidly and offers impressive energy density. This revolutionary prototype uses sodium (Na), a chemical element over 1000 times more abundant and cheaper than lithium (Li), the main component of conventional batteries. Generally, sodium-ion batteries face constraints such as lower power output, limited storage properties, and extended charging times. The innovative battery design, led by Professor Jeung Ku Kang of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at KAIST, combats existing limitations of sodium-ion batteries by integrating the anode materials used in traditional batteries with the cathodes used for supercapacitors into a hybrid system. The result reportedly delivers high storage capacity and rapid charge-discharge rates.

Donald Trump is now planning to headline a political fundraiser on the day he demanded a break in his hush money trial so that he could attend his youngest son Barron's high school graduation. On Monday, the Minnesota Republican Party announced that the former president will headline its annual Lincoln Reagan Dinner event on 17 May. The fundraiser will be held in Saint Paul, Minnesota, a roughly three hour and 45 minute flight from West Palm Beach, Florida, where Barron's graduation ceremony will take place. The high school event starts from 10am ET. It is not clear what time the Republican fundraiser gets under way. However, Mr Trump's busy schedule that day comes after he falsely claimed the judge in his hush money trial wouldn't give him a day off to attend his son's graduation from Oxbridge Academy. At the start of the trial in April, Mr Trump's legal team asked the judge to allow the criminal defendant the day off. Read more

As well as fronting underground rock lynchpins including Shellac and Big Black, Albini was a legend of the recording studio, though he preferred the term "engineer" to "producer." He recorded Nirvana's In Utero, Pixies' Surfer Rosa, PJ Harvey's Rid of Me, and countless more classic albums, and remained an outspoken critic of exploitative music industry practices until his final years. Shellac were preparing to tour their first album in a decade, To All Trains, which is scheduled for release next week. Steve Albini was 61 years old.

The problem, in short, is that the MAGA activists in charge are eating each other alive. States in which old-guard "establishment" Republicans were run off"seemingly paving the way for unified efforts on behalf of Trump"are instead beset by resignations, lawsuits, and financial crises. Conflicts are ongoing in Nevada, Idaho, Arizona, and Georgia as well as Michigan, and are tearing apart smaller chapters at even more local levels. It's a perplexing state of affairs given that these Republicans are so united behind their presumptive nominee. But as I learned in Grand Rapids, Donald Trump's wishes are sometimes beside the point to the people who followed him into the party. Their loyalties are to causes bigger"and stranger"than electing one person to the presidency. Read more
