Sen. Bernie Sanders has always been a political maverick, but these days the longest-serving independent in U.S. congressional history is not afraid to show his pragmatic side.

In an exclusive interview with USA TODAY on Wednesday, the senior senator from Vermont spoke about topics including the Israel-Hamas war, antisemitism, college protests, and President Joe Biden's record. One throughline that quickly became apparent was that Sanders would not let his differences with Biden on some issues get in the way of confronting something more urgent: the threat of former President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee.

He believes a policy change by Biden on Israel is long overdue, but also worries that young people are underestimating the true threat that Trump poses and in their anger over Israel and other issues, may not recognize that Biden is better on their side--even if he is not where they want him to be on Israel.

"... Sanders would not let his differences with Biden on some issues get in the way of confronting something more urgent:"

This a mature attitude; a matter of priorities. Always being the on the extreme, even when the consequences don't match the concerns, is childish, not to mention counter-productive.

Like voting 3rd party when that helps the worse possible outcome. Or putting ideals outcomes ahead of acceptable ones.

Lesser evil voting is still voting for evil.

That said, Trump is a unique case.

Biden will probably get my vote, Trump never will.

One supposes that that will be the closest you ever get to a mature attitude.

Bernie is proud of you... sort of.

You tell 'em Bernie!
If they wish to change the situation in the Middle East then they have to vote for congressmen/woman and senators that will do the work for them. The left needs all the branches of government and letting that orange raping traitor win the election just because Biden does not bend to your will on this one issue is the actions of a child. "If we do not play the game I wish to play, I'm going to take my ball him and play with myself!".

Going back to the topic...

... Bernie Sanders says young people are underestimating the Trump threat ...

I think many more than just the young 'uns are underestimating the Trump threat.

I'd proffer that supporters of fmr Pres Trump are also underestimating the threat.

Fmr Pres Trump needs their support now, but once he turns the Oval Office occupancy into his dictatorship, he won't needs those supporters anymore.

And what happens to people fmr Pres Trump no longer needs?

Trump is Rabid Dog,I can't comprehend how so many otherwise seemingly rational people support that Stupid ----.

America is probably doomed long term if trends don't change.

Bernie could be correct. But currently I don't see much signal, just a lot of noise.

They're not underestimating anything. They're looking in their wallets and realizing they've been had by this goofy old racist and his social/economic failures.

People vote with their wallet. Biden made Americans poor.

So, that's why the young 'uns may not vote to re-elect fmr Pres Trump.

Supporting Genocide openly while stepping on legal protests against it will hurt him. It should hurt him. In a just world.

In this world, Trump is far worse on Israel and everything else.

How Exceptional Nation elected someone like that is a symptom of how far gone our society really is.

When ten families own more than 170,000,000 people and political bribery is effectively legal that's what tends to happen.

Never holding leaders accountable for anything is also a big problem with our system.

Even Israel locks up corrupt Prime Ministers, several have been imprisoned over the years.

Bush, Nixon, Clinton. All recent presidents guilty of crimes but given no real consequences for committing them.

It smoothed the way for Trump and his over the top Criminality.
