People with a history of "self-mutilation," bipolar disorder, depression and drug and alcohol abuse can now seek waivers to join the Army under an unannounced policy enacted in August, according to documents obtained by USA Today. ... [A]ccepting recruits with those mental health conditions in their past carries risks, according to Elspeth Ritchie, a psychiatrist who retired from the Army as a colonel in 2010 and is an expert on waivers for military service. People with a history of mental health problems are more likely to have those issues resurface than those who do not, she said. "It is a red flag," she said. "The question is, how much of a red flag is it?" read more

Steven Rosenfield, Alternet: On Tuesday Wisconsin quietly added itself as the 28th state to call for a constitutional convention. 34 are needed to force a rewrite of the constitution that the republicans (who control every participating state) claim to love. They want to tear it up and rewrite it so that it will be easier to cut programs that benefit the needy but much harder to raise taxes or add spending. They want to remove language that has stymied their efforts in recent years. Little things like equal protection under a law, the right to due process, freedom of the press, etc. The draft new constitution is available on the ALEC website. It is a scary read.

The republicans like to argue about global warming and the effects of pollution and the role of the EPA as if it is all just a mental exercise in hypotheticals and theory. It is not. We know what happens without pollution controls. We have seen it before here in America before the Clean air act. We can see it abroad now. This is what deregulation will get us. It isn't theory it is observation

One of the most common refrains against corporate taxes and taxing dividend income is that it is "double taxed" taxed at the corporate level and then at the personal income level.

Now in a stunnningly hypocritical about face they want to remove the exemption for State and local taxes from the federal income tax code. They are fighting hard to make sure working class Americans whose income comes from labor get double taxed and possibly triple taxed at federal, state, and local levels.

Ex Trump aide Sebastian Gorka has Joined a group founded by Pizzagate Truthers.

She's a Wayne County Prosecutor talking about rape kits from the CITY of Detroit - which is a small portion of Wayne County. I am not saying everything she is saying isn't based on some facts but I think this is an oversimplification of the facts. I don't hear one mention of the fact that during this time Detroit was the violence capital of the country or #2 on the list. I don't hear how the police force was understaffed with a short budget. I don't hear about the fact that Detroit was in dire financial circumstances for decades. I don't actually hear the honest truth that during this time the city of Detroit was 85% Black - which also goes a long way to explaining the numbers. I am not saying there is a good excuse for this backlog happening but it all came down to the budget and not racism so much as I felt was portrayed. It was a black city run by blacks and to me that sort of negates the racism factor as well.
(On a macro scale Republicans should be learning from Detroit and what deficits do but it seems they just don't care.)

The thing that is worth noting is that SOME rape kits WERE processed and the selection of which to process seems to have been deliberate and selective in nature. One of the often overlooked sources of inequality is that when faced with funding to only provide services to SOME people a choice has to be deliberately made. It is telling that most of the unprocessed rape kits were for people the police would either consider criminal or insane.

For years prostitutes have been trapped between their pimps and the police who treat them as criminals. They have told the cameras many times they are trapped and can't get out because the police view them as throw away people. Maybe we should start listening
