A spokeswoman for the Department of Education confirmed on Monday that the department is no longer investigating civil rights complaints from transgender students banned from using bathrooms conforming with their gender identity. The development reverses 2016 guidance by the Obama administration that directed public school students to use the bathroom that matched their gender identity. The Obama administration's position was that Title IX, the federal law that bans sex discrimination in schools, protects transgender students. read more

The federal government this January ran a surplus while collecting record total tax revenues for that month of the year, according to the Monthly Treasury Statement released today. January was the first month under the new tax law that President Donald Trump signed in December. The high court's unanimous ruling builds on a series of cases it has decided since 2013, when it struck down a portion of the state's felony gun law that calls for serious penalties for anyone caught toting a loaded gun outside their home. The justices ruled that section of the state law violated the Second Amendment right to publicly carry loaded firearms. In a separate ruling two years later, justices further clawed back the law -- this time setting aside restrictions to carrying loaded guns on the streets, sidewalks and other "public ways." read more

The result beat the consensus forecast among economists, which predicted an increase of 180,000. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate remained at a 17-year low of 4.1 percent for the fourth month in a row. Perhaps the key element of the report was average hourly earnings which continued to rise. Hourly wages rose 0.3 percent from the prior month to $26.74, putting worker pay up 2.9 percent compared to January of last year, the largest 12-month gain since June 2009. read more
