So why are Republicans seemingly unfazed by the unpopularity of their initiatives? ...
Social justice issues trump economic issues. As long as republicans are on the "right side" of social justice issues, they can get away with picking the pockets of the average republican voter.
Until the Great Recession, the average republican was able to weather economic storms better than the average democrat. However, once the Great Recession hit, the average republican experienced much greater economic turmoil than ever before: their jobs disappeared, their savings disappeared, they died earlier, family members got hooked on drugs, etc. Then along comes Trump, who promised to end their economic suffering yet hewed to the same social justice ideology.
Now, before you get your panties in a bunch, I recognize that many Obama voters voted for Trump. They did so, not because of Trump's social justice positions but because of his economic promised: mostly more and better jobs; bringing jobs back, etc. However, Trump's popularity has been falling and I believe that it is those former Obama voters that have finally seen Trump for what he is: a lying POS.
