A central pillar of Rep. Devin Nunes' memo alleging wrongdoing by the FBI -- that the government did not disclose the political bias of a source when seeking a surveillance warrant -- is unfounded, House Intelligence Committee ranking member Adam Schiff told reporters Friday. But the memo alleges that those motivations were not included in the FISA application, and that senior Justice Department officials knew about Steele's anti-Trump bias. Schiff disputed the memo's assertion as "not accurate," saying the court was aware that there was a "likely political motivation" behind the Steele dossier. The California Democrat also said it is normal in FISA applications not to name individuals who may be sources of information.

Renato Marriotti, New York Times: For weeks, allies of President Trump ratcheted up pressure to "release the memo." ... The president himself said, after the memo's release on Friday, that it "vindicates" him in the probe. But it does no such thing. The memo from House Republicans, led by Representative Devin Nunes, fell well short of the hype. ... In fact, Mr. Trump's approval of the release of the memo and his comments that releasing it could make it easier for him to fire Mr. Rosenstein could help Robert Mueller, the special counsel, prove that Mr. Trump fired James B. Comey, then the F.B.I. director, with a "corrupt" intent -- in other words, the intent to wrongfully impede the administration of justice -- as the law requires. read more

Maya "Megalopolis" Below Guatemalan Jungle A vast, interconnected network of ancient cities was home to millions more people than previously thought. In what's being hailed as a "major breakthrough" in Maya archaeology, researchers have identified the ruins of more than 60,000 houses, palaces, elevated highways, and other human-made features that have been hidden for centuries under the jungles of northern Guatemala. Using a revolutionary technology known as LiDAR (short for "Light Detection And Ranging"), scholars digitally removed the tree canopy from aerial images of the now-unpopulated landscape, revealing the ruins of a sprawling pre-Columbian civilization that was far more complex and interconnected than most Maya specialists had supposed.

As previously reported, singer Dennis Edwards died at age 74 on Friday (Feb. 2) at his home in Chicago.

In 1968, Edwards laid his claim to fame when he took over lead vocals for The Temptations after previous frontman David Ruffin fell out of favor with the group.

The switch came at a pivotal time for the Motown heavyweights, who were riding a streak of 10 consecutive top 40 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 since 1966, with five of those tunes entering the top 10.

Edwards delivered and The Temptations continued their winning ways, landing 27 Hot 100 entries during the main Edwards era of late 1968 through 1977.

Nine of those titles reached the top 10, with three – "I Can't Get Next to You," "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)" and "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" – becoming the group's second, third and fourth No. 1 hits, respectively read more

Lanny Davis: The visible tip of the iceberg was James Comey's Oct. 28, 2016, letter to Congress. All data proves that, but for that letter 11 days from Election Day, Hillary Clinton wins the presidency. But evidence suggests that below that iceberg tip was, in effect, a "deep state" campaign, comprising certain active or former FBI agents, mostly from the powerful New York City office, former NYC Mayor and pathological Hillary hater Rudy Giuliani, and the vast right-wing media complex (amplified by the Russian government and bots). The trigger of the campaign was Comey's July 5 public announcement that no criminal case could be reasonably brought against Hillary Clinton for her email practices. Shortly thereafter, the effort to pressure Comey to change his mind and reopen the criminal investigation went into high gear. read more
