The more operative questions are, "what else does Pres Putin have in mind? And what do we plan to do to stop him?"
You are looking at this tactically. Therefore you are doomed when your opponent is fighting you strategically.
First I'm trivializing the issue, now I'm not looking at the bigger picture.
Why do you refuse to explain what you mean when you talk about a responding to a strategic trend? Sanctions aren't working. Economic warfare isn't working. What do you want to do?
If one remembers, they sent 3 nuke subs (Russian Alpha submarines with titanium hulls) to the bottom of the arctic to plant a Russian flag. It sounds stupid but it shows intent.

You'd think after all this meddling, the left would be lining up to be more clearly hawkish with Russia. Instead we get all this fence sitting because a real liberal knows that after you stop hiding behind people like Samantha Power, Susan Rice and Victoria Nuland, you're faced with the reality that you're encouraging a more hawkish stance against a nuclear power than the president himself. They'll think it, but they'll never say it.
