Ruth Ben-Ghiat: To many, it felt like a threshold had been passed on Wednesday night at Donald Trump's 2020 campaign rally in Greenville, North Carolina. I have seen this kind of expression before. In fact, I'd seen it that afternoon, as I watched a newsreel of Benito Mussolini standing before a crowd of cheering Italian Fascists in Rome.

From the leader's perspective, rallies are essential to maintaining his personality cult, and a reminder that his hard work indoctrinating people and securing their loyalty has not been in vain. Mussolini used to get turned on sexually by the adulation; he'd ask his lover Clara Petacci to watch the spectacle, hiding behind him, and then take her violently (as was his habit). Adolf Hitler, too, craved adoration. Years before he came to power, his propaganda wizard Joseph Goebbels saw that he was a wooden and boring speaker in the studio: he needed an audience to come alive. Trump is in this tradition: he'd be nothing without the public attention he colonizes 24/7 by his outrageous tweets, comments, and actions, and he's sensitive about crowd size. Whether in Rome, Berlin, or Greenville, the strongman needs those crowds more than they need him.

Hitler wasn't a bad fellow, he was just misunderstood and unfairly judged.

What this "exposure" is doing is ensuring the squad's reelection.
Most clear thinking Americans know this.

The only difference between Trump's rhetoric and Hillary's rhetoric in 2016 was the size of the crowds.

Banner is highlighting the Democrats new rhetoric; "Hitler! Mussolini! Dictator!" which is just more-same political rhetoric.
In the end, it's a bunch of emotionally appealing political rhetoric. Democrats should focus on energizing policies and ways to pay for it.

Both parties are trying to build cults and cult followers. Some of the zombies post here.

Trump is following the same methodology that Americans were warned about by the US Army in the late 1940's. The same one that successfully propelled multiple authoritarian regimes to power and kept them there in the last 100 years.

For those who say it can't happen here, it can happen anywhere. We're all human, and follow the same basic behaviours. It's happening as we watch, and as we bicker amongst ourselves.

Yes - EXACTLY, that is why he is doing it. I find it funny that Dems think this is a good thing for their party. AOC has a 100% safe seat unless she is re-districted out of it. It is not going GOP. However - given the Squad is toxic to most Americans - and importantly - the middle class working people that the Dems need to flip to win in 2020 - keeping them in the limelight and the face of the Democrat party is the smart thing to do. 4D chess vs. checkers.
