Tragic, and potentially disastrous for the immediate area if the reactor casing had opened but not something you'd call "a planetary catastrophe". Among other reports we've seen (not verified so grain of salt) is that seven of the dead were captains, meaning whatever they were up to was pretty important.

You cant set off a nuke by beating it on the nose with a hammer or setting it on fire. A precise chain of events has to take place. I'll keep you updated if you aren't scared enough already though.

Possibly the most relevant post in the articles thread is the Dead Mans Hand ploy.

Step 1 disarm the victim.

I'm guessing someone failed at that..

It's technically true. It's mapping the deep ocean, for cables to splice and cut. It's a fancy way to go about it, we used to make SEALs swim out of torpedo tubes to do that job.

How can they remain mobile in such extreme temperatures, let alone the pressure?! Rescue workers have difficulties near surface conditions, let alone in complete darkness carrying equipment. They must be quite special people.

It's inhuman to shoot a trained seal out of a torpedo tube. The people responsibly for this war crime need to be prosecuted.

Energy industry uses divers that will live in pressure chamber habitats for months on end stationed in the arctic. Thea Navy has had Atmospheric Diving Systems since the 1920s, modern subs are equipped with lockout chambers for divers, etc.
