Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Gov. Bill Lee has proclaimed Saturday as Nathan Bedford Forrest Day in Tennessee, a day of observation to honor the former Confederate general and early Ku Klux Klan leader whose bust is on display in the state Capitol. ... "I signed the bill because the law requires that I do that and I haven't looked at changing that law," Lee said Thursday. He declined to say whether he believed state law should be changed to no longer require the governor to issue such proclamations or whether he had reservations about doing so.

The link doesn't go into Forrest's history, but In These Times accurately describes him as "the Confederate general who committed the single worst atrocity of the Civil War -- the Fort Pillow massacre, brutally murdering hundreds of African-American and white Union soldiers who had already surrendered -- and then became the first national leader of the Ku Klux Klan."

Didn't Forrest eventually renounce the klan and try to put it down?

And people, exclusively right-wingers as it turns out, say there's no such thing as institutional racism!

And my friends wonder why I left that state, never to return.

#2 | Posted by aborted_monson And where do you reside? Probably a state not nearly as pretty as Tennessee. Every one has a history. In 1782 they sold slaves on Wall Street in New York City. Slavery was legal in Connecticut and Massachusetts later than 1802.

There are still curfew bells in some remote Oregon towns.

I think interracial marriage was only legalized in the 60's.

Portland has an underground now used as a tourist attraction that used to be called Little Shanghai - even older homes may have caged dungeons.

KKK stuff aside he was on the level of Ho Chi Minh, better than Che but not quite Fidel as a guerilla commander.
He had 29 horses shot from under him.

"that devil Forrest must be hunted down and killed if it costs ten thousand lives and bankrupts the federal treasury."

But do they still hold celebrations of their wicked past to thie day? I don't hold the South's past against anyone except those who try ro pretend it was glorious and try to celebrate it. It was horrible, evil, sick and it should be remembered that way. "Look away, look away, look away."

There's a hideous statue of Forrest on his horse along I-65 (lit at night) some wealthy ultra conservative type put up after a court fight.

For the record, Nashville is an educated, progressive city with 120,000 college and university students and lots of IT and white collar workers. Williamson County south of here is a wealthy area chalk full of Talibaptists, and home to Marsha Blackburn. Like most states, the rural parts are red as a fire engine.

So he's a horse murderer too? You would think he would finally decide to get a horse that could dodge, but no - he didn't.

In reaction to the Fort Pillow atrocity, Lincoln published an order saying that for every black prisoner shot after capture, a confederate prisoner would be executed. The shooting of black prisoners stopped immediately. History is bloody. Sometimes it takes the most inhumane actions or the threat of them to stop inhumanity. Nathan Bedford Forrest was a genius in tactics, and a monster through out. He was notorious for shooting defenseless prisoners, Fort Pillow was only different in scale. He continued his actions while being the the leader of the Klu Klux Klan. Note that a third of the victims of the Klan were white. He was in favor of the murder of school teachers, missionaries and officers of the Freeman's Bureau.
