Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Santa Clara University's student government has voted against granting official status to the campus chapter of Young Americans for Freedom (YAF), on the grounds that the group's goals -- bringing conservative speakers to the California campus -- would contribute to an unsafe climate for marginalized students.

Morons. If you can't handle diversity of opinion then enroll in a trade school.

$47,000 tuition. Those are pretty high babysitting fees.

... contribute to an unsafe climate for marginalized students. ...

From the cited article:

..."I also think that the presence of YAF would further marginalize minority students on campus and if anything makes minority students feel more unsafe or targeted," said one student senator in a statement.

Another student senator lamented that YAF might bring conservative pundit Ben Shapiro to campus and Shapiro's presence would cause "emotional harm."

The vote was 13–13, which fell short of the needed two-thirds majority to confer formal recognition, according to The College Fix....

To be honest, I'm having difficulties with this one.

The way the article is written, it seems as if the students who voted against do not want to hear differing opinions.

On the other hand, "conservative opinions" nowadays has taken on a decidedly hateful and violence-promoting viewpoint of late.

So my current opinion is, not enough information available.

My core issue is that "conservative" no longer has a benign meaning in common everyday usage. It is difficult to discern the meaning when that word is used nowadays.

[aside: I remember the days when "conservative" meant that it was worthy to read and maybe even learn something. Unfortunately, nowadays, that is no longer true.]

I think venues get to decide who their speakers are and who their speakres aren't, and as long as those reasons aren't illegal, that's how it goes.

If you are the type of person who disagrees with me about things like this, just imagine it was a gay wedding cake asked to speak at a campus event.

I do not necessarily disagree with that. However, if it is a state-school, then things get a ittle more interesting.

I'm stuck on imagining a cake that can talk, gay or otherwise...

"On the other hand, "conservative opinions" nowadays has taken on a decidedly hateful and violence-promoting viewpoint of late."

Ben Shapiro is hateful and promotes violence?

It's also worth noting that Shapiro's presence on college campuses tyipcally requires a large police presence as well. Not to quell right wing violence, but rather to control left wing protesters.

"I think venues get to decide who their speakers are and who their speakres aren't, and as long as those reasons aren't illegal, that's how it goes."

So if ac ollege rejected a muslim speaker on the grounds that the speaker might make students feel "unsafe" or "cause emotional harm" you'd be cool with it?

I'm with you...but I don't think you're with you. I think if it was the students at SCU turning away a Muslim speaker, you'd be lecturing us all right now about discrimination, prejudice, white priviledge, and any other causes you could tie in.

Antifa should disband in order not to hand a whatabout talking point to the Nazis. The Nazis will defend free speech right up to the point they can kill free speech.

That sounds like it might be illegal, since the only reason you've provided is "Muslim" and religion is a protected class.

This is just so very troubling and shocking to hear, from a guy equates "liberal" with Stalinist.

Under the guise of the words freedom and democracy the far right continued to operate an aggressive program of pillaging and plundering the labor, resources and savings of the working class. Trumpians must be confronted with facts, not just ridiculed.

It's none of my business. I don't have kids in that school, I don't pay any tuition to that school. In my own home, where I get to make the rules, no right wing a*****e is going to enter and shoot off their stupid mouth and I don't care what anyone thinks about that.

Laudable POV, Danni. Does your libertarian view of a private entity's right to defend their castle against assault extend to a homeowner owning a firearm? To the US meddling in disputes between sovereign nations? To someone flying a Confederate flag at their house? To someone being forced to perform a service in their own establishment against their will? Are you willing to extend the "my house, my rules - not my house, not my business" view beyond that one limited instance?

Really?????? LMAO! That's some funny ---- right there! That mentality comes from troglodytes and hilljacks that were homeschooled by idiots and then overdosed on Infowars and Newsmax propaganda.

Idiocracy is happening before our very eyes.

Intellectual? He's too young to earn such a title. He has potential but we'll see.

Lemme guess - you think he's a Nazi deserving an excruciating and slow torturous death, after being forced to watch his wife be raped and his kids be murdered first. Right?

Jeffry again with the straw man, it's your only move, LOL

Benny your hero, like you, doesn't know the definition of the word "fascist". Which makes him, like you, an idiot. I highly suggest you look up the definition of the word, you may learn something.

Benny, like you supports a political party that throws brown children in cages under heinous living conditions which is Nazi like behavior. So if you support the Grand Old Nazi Party, in government, you're probably a Nazi. Connect the dots.

This has been brewing in GOP circles for a long time it just is really coming out under your Orange Fuhrer now.

Get off of Fox News, Infowars, 4chan, the daily stormer, Breitbart and the other alt-right propaganda sources for once in your miserable life and do your homework and look up the name Prescott Bush...... and whom he was "paling around with" and financially supporting in the 1930's and early 1940's.

Of course I doubt you will because FACTS and your political ideology don't mesh well.

"throws brown children in cages under heinous living conditions which is Nazi like behavior"

Actually, that was FDR-like behavior...and Obama-like behavior.

..and I likewise suggest YOU do some research into what a fascist is. Try reading something written more than 10 years ago, before Lenin's Useful Idiots started rewriting the definition.
