Chicago Coalition for the Homeless: Chicago's hefty homeless population includes nearly 14,000 people who are working and more than 18,000 who have been to college -- countering common misconceptions that anyone who collects a paycheck or pursues an academic degree is immune from one of life's most desperate economic straits, a new report by the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless (CCH) finds. The analysis, drawn from data compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau and the City of Chicago, estimates that the city's homeless population surpassed 86,000 people in 2017, the latest year for which figures are available.

Educated people would rather sleep on the streets, than buy one of those $25k houses in Chicago. Ouch.

Chicago's steep housing costs contribute to homelessness in the city, the report said. The "housing wage" needed to afford a two-bedroom apartment in urban areas is over $23 per hour, according to the National Low Income Housing Coalition.

A woke studies major is so much better educated and prepared for the real world than a trump university grad.

Hundreds of sub $700 apartments

So educated people are choosing not to go to them. They'd rather be homeless than live in those places.

I guess Chicago can be proud of their educated homeless.

*thumbs up*

$23/hr is under $4k/month gross. On that, you're definitely not living in the luxury high rise apartments in Chicago. Those are $1500-$3000+ month. You'd be struggling after taxes & bills.

I guess our resident "progressive" is going to spend time insulting homeless people today.

Bogus article.

Right off the bat, the article doesn't mention what types of degrees they possess. Not every degree has a market. A bachelor's of Art degree almost always is a throw away. A B of Science isn't always marketable. Right now, only STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths)focused degrees are in demand in America. However, not all STEM degrees equal high pay.

If I were young, I'd move to Quebec, where STEM degree French speaking Americans can pretty much write their own ticket.

I don't put much weight on these types of articles. Studies and/or surveys usually are inclined to serve the purposes of the person or agency who funds it rather than be reality based.

Just 200 years ago, studies concluded the earth was flat. About 50 years ago, we just barely landed on the moon and found out that it wasn't made of cheese. Ask a MAGA today and he'll go on a tantrum that the Apollo missions were bogus.

"18,000 Degrees"

I knew that Chicago had hot summers, but this is ridiculous!

My B of A provides a very nice lifestyle for me. It's not the degree, it's what you do with it.

Trump has a masters. But his daddy bought it for him.

Ben Carson is a brain surgeon. Also a total moron.

Bill Gates dropped out of high school.

Seriously, you are uninterested in the plight of actual citizens because?? You are promoting a different nation and using a different language and a different education that will suit Americans interests? You mean yours, not theirs.

Also, whatever you believe - from this homeless study to the Apollo missions you are wrong.

You consider yourself a "progressive" of some flavor? Where do you live? I'm curious how your enclave deals with these two issues of income versus costs. If the study is even half correct you still aren't addressing the standard cost of living. You just want to ship them outside of your city because they don't have the right education.

Okay. So what habitable $25k houses? Most of those appear to be condemned meth labs.

The only good thing about rehab-ing condemned meth labs is that the lingering chemicals make the work go so much faster.

You're going to have to step up a little bit and clear the crackheads out with a bat. After that you can polish those turds up. Gentrification has to start somewhere, and it starts with white, starving artists moving into poor black neighborhoods.

Aint no white folks lived in those houses.

Maybe crack labs...
