United Nations:Citing 66 deaths during protests between January and May 2019, of which 52 were attributable to Government security forces, or pro-Government armed civilian groups known as "colectivos", OHCHR maintains that, as of 31 May 2019, 793 people remained in arbitrary detention, including 58 women. "They contributed to the deteriorating situation by exercising social control and helping repress demonstrations," the OHCHR report says of the paramilitary groups. Allegations of extrajudicial killings by security forces have been "shockingly high", the report continues, citing the involvement of Government so-called Special Action Forces (FAES). In 2018, the Government registered 5,287 killings, purportedly for "resistance to authority" during operations, the report continues, adding that between 1 January and 19 May this year, another 1,569 people were killed, according to Government figures. Turning to the country's political crisis, the report notes that, so far this year, 22 deputies of the National Assembly have been stripped of their parliamentary immunity, as well as to the forum's leader, Mr. Guaido.

Pres Trump seems to have relegated Venezuela to the back burner, it if remains on the stove at all.

He's created too many other crises, so I guess he had to let Venezuela drop from his attention.

Or maybe he just got bored with it when things were not going his way.

Late stage socialism. In the end, Nikolae Ceausescue's killing machine couldn't save him from the firing squad.

Pres Trump seems to have relegated Venezuela to the back burner,

Where it should be ... we shouldn't get involved, but try to keep everyone else out too.

There isn't anything good that can come out of us getting involved.

@#5 ... but try to keep everyone else out too. ...

Too late for that.

The Russian military has already landed their strategic bombers in Venezuela airfields.

So, should we still keep it on the back burner now that the horses have left through the open barn door?

Or just pretend it's not there anymore...

You have to figure out what you want, Lamp: intervention by Trump or hands off diplomacy to let Venezuela/South America fend for themselves. As the Diceman would say, there's no middle ground.

Personally, I say we support Venezuela's neighbors in what they are doing while keeping an eye on Russia, China and Cuba and let South America deal with it for the time being.

@#7 ...You have to figure out what you want, Lamp...

It is not I, but Pres Trump, who needs to figure out what he wants. He is the one who appears to be vacillating.

Sorry, I took #2 as a criticism that he should do more, when in this instance I think that the US is doing the right thing for now.

There's a dime's worth of separation between him and Trump.

Does anyone think Maduro cares one iota about what the UN calls for?

46 of 56 witnesses to these events were outside Venezuela during the alleged events and their UN interview. All official documentation submitted to the UN report from the Venezuelan government was omitted from the report which is a pack of lies designed to discredit the existing government and justify further interference. The trade sanctions should be halted.

UN critical of US = Good

UN critical of Venezuela = Pack of lies.

We certainly know today that EVERY war the USA has started since WWII was based on lies. But RoC knows this time it's different.

I don't know that RoC is advocating for war...rather just pointing out again what socialism looks like when it lacks a capitalist sponsor.

Big Bad United States wants everyone to believe Socialism is so awful so we place embargos and sanctions on those nation's economies to insure their economic failure. What has Venezuela done to the United States that empowers us to place sanctions on them? What has Cuba done to us? This is just imperialism which makes enemies out of potential friends and never results in success.
