He could have gone home after 50 missions during WWII, but he chose to continue.

Thank you. RIP

(And thank you NAACP for making it possible for him to fly)

His life must have been fascinating.

To be Black in the south when the stockmarket crashed.......and to live long enough to see a Black President.

wow.

Must have been pretty good at what he did. I didn't see his name on the Wiki list of aces--must just be me. With that many sorties flown, he must have encountered many top flyers--all of whom were shooting at him and those in his squadron. Thanks for your service. RIP--you certainly deserve it...

Wow, Indeed...

The Tuskegee Study was an infamous and unethical clinical study conducted between 1932 and 1972 by the U.S. Public Health Service.

The purpose of this study was to observe the natural history of untreated syphilis; the African-American men in the study were told they were receiving free health care from the United States government.

The Public Health Service started working on this study in 1932 in collaboration with Tuskegee University, a historically black college in Alabama. Investigators enrolled in the study a total of 600 impoverished, African-American sharecroppers from Macon County, Alabama.

Of these men, 399 had previously contracted syphilis before the study began, and 201 did not have the disease.

The men were given free medical care, meals, and free burial insurance for participating in the study. The men were told that the study was only going to last six months, but it actually lasted 40 years.

After funding for treatment was lost, the study was continued without informing the men that they would never be treated. None of the men were told that they had the disease, and none were treated with penicillin even after the antibiotic was proven to successfully treat syphilis.

AS I have said many times before.... stay away from that FREE democrat government cheese...

Well, thank God Democrats fought to put an end to Jim Crow and give blacks the same rights as whites enjoyed.

And that the NAACP fought like hell for Col Friend's right to fly airplanes in service to his country.

ummmmm NO..... Little short on history....

Well, thank God Democrats fought to put an end to Jim Crow and give blacks the same rights as whites enjoyed.

Actually Southern Democrats (dixiecrats) started and supported the KKK. Many were members of the KKK as well - Democrats fought for Jim Crow laws and segregation. Many a democrat judge let off folks known to be involved with lynchings. Not much had changed until the early 60's.

And that the NAACP fought like hell for Col Friend's right to fly airplanes in service to his country.

NO - even though the NAACP was formed in 1903 they actually had no political power until the early 60's. Instead credit a democrat president and his wife.

FDR paralyzed by polio sent his wife Eleanor as his eyes and ears. Not staying inside the lines, Eleanor had a perchent to visits slums, farms and other other areas beyond the control of her handlers. Comments were always the same, African Americans wanted to fight with front line units in Europe for America but were only allow to participate in secondary roles.

Eleanor told FDR this and FDR ask the joint chiefs to setup an African American fighter squadron. They said no and then FDR ordered it. Even after pilots were trained , no one in the Army Air Corp wanted an African American squadron. Again FDR had to order it.

They were hated even after the war.

I remember visiting the USAF museum at WrightPat 1965. They did NOT even have a Tuskegee Airman exhibit. I was told back then that most of the items donated simply went to the landfill. Which is why there is so little to display in 2019. Of the items left - most are historically scrubbed so that what you see now bears very little historical resemblance to reality in 1945. Even now 2019, racism in the Air Corps is still not even mentioned in any of the exhibits.

"Actually Southern Democrats (dixiecrats) started and supported the KKK."

Because Republicans led the War of Northern Aggression, and confiscated Southern property without compensation.
Give Republicans a little credit!
