Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Iranian forces have shot down a United States military drone, a move that appears to have escalated the volatile situation playing out between Washington and Tehran in the Middle East. Iran's Revolutionary Guard said it had shot down an "intruding American spy drone" after it entered into the country's territory Thursday.

From the sounds of Pompeo, it's an act of war *rolls eyes* He was also (as I'm sure you've heard) trying to make the Al Qaeda-Iran connection. Al Qaeda being Sunni and Iran being Shia, that makes absolutely no sense.

BTW, when we were attacked on 9/11, Iran's government stood ready to help us catch the perpetrators. Tens of thousands of average Iranians were on the streets decrying the terrorist attack and holding candlelight vigils, mourning with us.

How The CIA Overthrew Iran's Democracy In 4 Days

Over .. wait for it .... oil. Iran nationalized their oil, the Brits asked for help, and America overthrew their democracy in 1953. We stood back in the Bush years as Israel destroyed Lebanon's infrastructure - newly rebuilt after the end of a long civil war - and hurt the Middle East's best democracy while claiming to overthrow Saddam to install democracy aka "freedom" there.

And that's just to mention three countries where America's actions have caused death and chaos and not 'freedom.'

Transit passage en.m.wikipedia.org

"Transit passage is a concept of the Law of the Sea, which allows a vessel or aircraft the freedom of navigation or overflight solely for the purpose of continuous and expeditious transit of a strait between one part of the high seas or exclusive economic zone and another. The requirement of continuous and expeditious transit does not preclude passage through the strait for the purpose of entering, leaving or returning from a state bordering the strait, subject to the conditions of entry to that state."

#8 | Posted by MUSTANG at 2019-06-20 10:17 AM | Reply

Part 2

"Transit passage exists throughout the entire strait, not just the area overlapped by the territorial waters of the coastal nations. The ships and aircraft of all nations, including warships, auxiliaries, and military aircraft, enjoy the right of unimpeded transit passage in such straits and their approaches. Submarines are free to transit international straits submerged since that is their normal mode of operation[citation needed]. The legal regime of transit passage exists in the most important straits for the international trade exchange and security (Strait of Gibraltar, Dover Strait, Strait of Hormuz, Bab-el-Mandeb, Strait of Malacca)."

It's his job. There is a war going on. The US backed Saudi-Jordan-Israel-Egypt-Kuwait coalition vs the Russian backed Iran-Syria-Lebanon-Qatar axis. The fighting continues to rage in Syria and Yemen between national and proxy forces. Iran is using Houthi rebels to launch ballistic missiles into Saudi Arabia.

It's obvious by their statements that they were tracking the drone and as soon as it entered any area that could be contestable, they shot it down. They are reaching for reasons to try to keep themselves in the news. Just like NK, they know when people stop caring about them they've lost the battle.

So far it seems that this one was in international airspace. It's a naval version of a Global Hawk. It loiters at 60,000 feet. From there you can look 300 miles into Iran with good cameras. When we go into Iran we use stealth drones.

First I have to ask you how it is provocative to shoot down a foreign drone in your airspace.

First of all, the drone came down in the Strait of Hormuz outside of Iran airspace, hence Mustang's transit citation.

Second, the picture that the Iranians posted has now been proven to be two years old from when Houthi rebels shot down a drone in Yemen.

Finally, Iran has proudly proclaimed that it also has its own drones flying over the Strait of Hormuz observing shipping, the UAE and the Saudi coast, and neither the US or its proxies have shot them down.

The BAMS-D has been flying that route 20 times a month (or more) for 10 years, along with US and Australian P-3's and P-8's. If you think it WAS trying to get shot down, you're not intellectually qualified for the short bus.

That's because people like you hear "Iranian" and they think of people chanting "Death to America."
It's the same pathology as people like you hear "concentration camps" and think "Nazi death camps."
It's because your political outlook is grounded in the belief that the Bad Guys are always trying to kill America.

Iranian vs Persian.

In high school, 11th grade. I told someone I was Persian. This Iranian girl I knew at the time corrected me and told me I'm Iranian, not Persian because Persians don't exist anymore.

In college I told a friend I was Persian, he said he didn't realize Persians existed anymore. That they were an ancient people.

I think Iranians use Persian because it sounds royal and regal. Also they don't want to be considered Iranian. Mostly because the is connotation is Iranians are Muslims.

The majority of Iranians in Los Angeles are Jewish. The majority of Iranians in Orange County are Muslim.

I was raise Christian. Because my dad was raised Christian and my stepmom was of Northern European decent and was raised Christian.

(This is literally the most I've ever shared about myself on the site. I must be getting soft in my old age.)

Didn't realize that there was math in the middle of the birthday celebration, did you?

A 3rd Khodad missile flies at approximately 3000 ft/sec, if the Raptor was cruising at 360 mph, it took 13 seconds to get to 40,000 ft., so the drone went about one mile from launch to hit.

The Raptor has its engine right over its center-mass wing so the impact likely took off at least one wing, causing the remains to go into a flat spin. Radar says that the Raptor was 18 miles off the Iran coast, so at best it splashed between 20 and 16 miles off the coast.

Sorry, its a Global Hawk, but everything still stands in 141. Iran also has admitted that they recovered remains off their coastal waters:

Iran said Thursday it had recovered parts of a US spy drone in its territorial waters, after downing the aircraft in a missile strike slammed by President Donald Trump as a "big mistake."

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif announced late Thursday that parts of the drone had been recovered in Iranian territorial waters, as Tehran moved to bring the incident before the United Nations.

The Pentagon denounced the "unprovoked attack," claiming the navy drone was 34 kilometers (21 miles) from Iran when destroyed by a surface-to-air missile.

But the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it brought the drone down as it was "violating Iranian air space" over the waters of Hormozgan province.

"We've retrieved sections of the US military drone in OUR territorial waters where it was shot down."

But the Pentagon published a map showing the flight path of the drone, which indicated it traveled outside of Iranian waters and included a photograph showing it was at the coordinates (25°57'42"N 56°50'22"E) when it was downed.

So even the Iranians are now admitting that it was over the water when they fired on it. As Mustang pointed out in #9, regardless of territorial water claims, "ships and aircraft of all nations, including warships, auxiliaries, and military aircraft, enjoy the right of unimpeded transit passage in such straits and their approaches."

Yes.

As a kid growing up, 40 was always the year I considered "old". I guess mentally I have put more weight on this year than any year previous. Which resulted in it feeling heavier.

Also, as a kid, I always pictured myself, my life, at 40, being a lot different. Like I would have it all figured out by now.

But life has its own plans for us.

I've definitely enjoyed the past 40 years of life. Maybe too much...

Here's hoping for the next 40+ years of life to be as fun as the first 40.

How many times do you need me to answer that:

The Iranians admitted it was over the water when they fired on it, the missile took 13 seconds to reach altitude and there is no way it glided more than a mile or so.

I know you really want to argue that it loitered over Iran undetected, but the Global Hawk is not stealthy, Iran is bristling with radar and if it had been over land Iran's claims that it's airspace was violated by a US drone would be much stronger than saying was violating "OUR territorial waters where it was shot down."

As Mustang pointed out earlier, the Naval Global Hawk, at 40K+ ft, can see over 300 miles into Iran, so there is no need for it to overfly land.

We've had sanctions against Iran since 1995 because Israel and Saudi Arabia like that. We assassinated their democratically elected President in 1954 and installed the Shah of Iran as our ruthless monarch TWICE. Their revolution ended all that but there were no leaders left except Mullahs capable of taking control of the country and the poor innocent Iranians have been suffering ever since.

WE have no right to interfere in the domestic affairs of other as we so often do and no right to whine when other do the same to us.

The orange sloth is just the latest manifestation of the ugly American, arrogant, belligerent, dishonest, fat, greedy, ill informed, narcissistic, ruthless and devoid of any empathy for the lives it destroys so that it can have more.

The greatest acts of treason in our own country involve Iran and Nicaragua. BushI, Ollie North, Elliott Abrams and others conspired against our elected officials to withhold the release of US hostages from Iran until after the Reagan/Carter election was concluded, in exchange for US missiles. The same gang of thugs went on to run weapons to the Nicaraguan Contras, in spite of explicit Congressional legislation forbidding such activity, and running cocaine into the USA to pay for the weapons, which just happened to have coincided with the crack epidemic in the USA. Crack being a smoke-able derivative of cocaine. If anybody in this country deserved the death penalty it was the leaders of these crimes.

It's their job.

But we don't need to violate their airspace and it really pisses them off that we can stay 21 miles offshore and get info that they would need to overfly to obtain.

Trust me, the ROE for surveillance flights is very strict, if the Global Hawk pilot at Creech who was piloting this drone violated ROE, he/she won't be flying much longer.

#185 | Posted by GOnoles92 at 2019-06-20 10:30 PM | Reply

Let's say, for sake of argument, the drone was, in the moments prior, flying in Iranian airspace.
Would that make the Iranian military action any more okay?

#186 | Posted by snoofy at 2019-06-20 10:33 PM | Reply

Trust me, the ROE for surveillance flights is very strict, if the Global Hawk pilot at Creech who was piloting this drone violated ROE, he/she won't be flying much longer.

#173 | POSTED BY RIGHTOCENTER

The pilot was actually in Maryland, I believe, but they don't fly the aircraft unless they have to. The aircraft flies its own programmed mission profile.

Yes as usual you missed everything that matters

The US says a Global Hawk drone was shot down by an Iranian missile in international airspace over the Strait of Hormuz.

US sources say the drone was monitoring loading of Iranian ships. That implies it was near enough to port to have visual surveillance of the loading process.

#185 More than you think. In addition to what the SEALS have and smaller UAVs like ScanEagle and BlackJack, there's the FireScout.

The BAMS-D was originally intended to be a short-term technology demonstrator to test out ideas for Triton, and ended up flying for a decade, almost exclusively in CENTCOM. Triton is the Navy's new maritime surveillance asset. When fully operational, there will be 5 airborne 24/7/365 over the world's oceans.

Where it came down is not the same as where it was intercepted.

Iran posted the coordinates of where the craft was when they fired. They also posted radar image of same. It was in their airspace. Longitude, latitude put it right on top of their coastline. At the presumed altitude, 55-60000 ft., the wreckage would have landed in international waters.

No, Iran says that "it was "violating Iranian air space" over the waters of Hormozgan province", which is not Iranian air space under international law.

Try again.

#189

So what, the drone can see for 300 miles, it could have done that from the UAE.

Trust me, they see plenty from 20-30 miles. For instance, on Qeshm, near Messen, there's a very stealthy little underground submarine pen. You can see it on Google Earth if you want. We watched them build it, one day at a time. Think for a minute....remember watching video of the space shuttle returning to Earth? You know how far away the camera on the Navy plane was that captured that? Longer than 30 miles, skippy.

1979 was an eventful year in Iran's history. Happy Birthday!

I know plenty of Iranians who use both interchangeably, but more often than not it is because Americans hear "Arab" when you mention Iranians, and they also have a poor understanding of Iranians who live here as generally having escaped political persecution. I knew an Iranian woman whose father was killed because he was Baha'i - also Christians and Muslims. Bay Area and LA...there are a lot of different subcultures in Iran.

Persian is also less likely to be mispronounced by Americans, unlike Eyeraynian. Most Americans couldn't point Iran out on a map, and think Tehran looks like Baghdad in the 1800's.

Most Persians in the States have no love for the mullahs, and large numbers in Iran are also increasingly against the theocrats that took power in the late 70's (congratulations America, you built that!)

Not one of the Iranians I've met in the US has ever said or done anything to indicate they have anything but love for America. Americans, on the other hand, are largely clueless.

Vacillation does not look good for any President. And Trump is such proven liar that not even our NATO allies believe a word he says ~ so he had no coalition support ready to jump in if things escalated.

All he did was expose his incompetency to the whole world. Now even our enemies have his number. The President of the United States is a toothless tiger, a blowhard and a big bag of intestinal gas. (farts)

Imagine now how Kim Jong Un must be re-thinking Trump's threats to North Korea. Kim Jong Un must be smiling from ear to ear at his good fortune.

And Trump's indecisiveness probably gave Nancy Pelosi a new lease on life, too. Not to mention all the Democrat candidates who want his job.
