in a perverted sort of way it's interesting to see power in the hands of a character like this. it's also interesting/terrifying that power equates to "the right of fearless leader to do what he wishes" and that it's accepted by so many.

I'm at the point lately where I am wondering how much further Pres Trump has to go towards dictatorship before the Republicans in Congress start calling him out on it.

There's been a theory between my friends and I that this is Trump's ultimate goal.

To become a dictator like the men he admires so much.

All he needs is one more seat on the Supreme Court to get them to revisit presidential term limits.

The Republicans have already figured out how to win national elections by any means necessary.

Trump says anything of the sort a third time and new laws will be enacted declaring such speeches to be criminal threats.

Another very normal thing for a totally straight, not at all morally bankrupt president to say.

I remember a few years back when Obama was in the White House. Many fringe right wingers on this site expressed worries that Obama had a plan to stay in power after his eight years was up. Never mind that Obama never said anything to that effect or did anything along those lines. It was silly, but the rightwingers were serious.

The difference now is, it is Trump himself making noises about extending his power. It is Trump himself aligning himself with pretty much every dictator in the world. It is actually funny stuff. He is not gonna last into a fifth year let alone eight years.

So let's just say the Constitution is amended to allow this by 2020. Would we suddenly see Obama jump in and win the Democratic nomination?

CLOWN

"All he needs is one more seat on the Supreme Court to get them to revisit presidential term limits. "

The Supreme Court has nothing to do with amending the Constitution.

An Amendment has to jump through a lot of congressional hoops (2/3rds of this and 2/3rds of that). Then it has to go to the individual states and be ratified by 38 out of 50 states.

It's a long and politically treacherous road to travel. I don't think Trump will live that long.

#18 | Posted by Twinpac at 2019-06-16 06:09 PM | Reply

I don't care how many terms he serves or doesn't serve... he's leaving office in disgrace. The clown brigade loved bragging it up about Bush-hole deux second term... we know how well that went. When was was the last time a former republicl*wn preznit showed up at their own convention? There were 2 living.

Pigs are stupid... This presidency is turning into one big sizzling fat fry... and he is leaving party in flames.

I just finished read this for the first time. One, he has confidence that he'll win. That's a hoot. Two, he thinks he is going to live forever. He's 73, in horrible health, and has stress beyond belief. That was another laugh at his expense

No, but they appointed Bush II President so they could just as easily rule that term limits don't apply to Orange Agent.

That was Dick Cheney's voodoo. But yes, a psycho like Donald Trump is quite capable of creating a crisis so devastating and horribly destructive beyond imagination that the Supreme Court could, by necessity, extend his presidency for another two years. But by then, I think the 25th Amendment would likely kick in, with newsreels of Trump in a strait jacket and drool bubbling out of his mouth.

But they can't change the 22nd Amendment willy-nilly. That would require a ratification by three quarters of both houses of congress and 38 out of 50 states.

#23 | Posted by Twinpac

That only works if everyone involved believes that the Constitution should be followed even if you don't like the results. By ignoring subpoenas, the Hatch Act, and other actions Rs are showing that they don't need any stinkin' Constitution. They know what's right. That's the way it works in many third world countries and Rs are envious of that freedom.

I don't disagree with you. By disregarding laws, Trump is laying the groundwork. In his new world, laws, norms and protocols, courts, decency and even the Constitution will be irrelevant ~ which is exactly what he's doing now. If he ever hits the big time his depravity won't know any limits. He's a very sick man.

"The Republicans have already figured out how to win national elections by any means necessary. "

The Democrats taught them very well during their gerrymandering efforts in the 90s. Don't complain when your own tactics come back to bite you in the ass. This goes for both parties but Dems are the funnest because of their refusal to be objective in any way. At least money makes Reps objective; nothing makes Dems objective. I mean, the past 2 Dem Presidents have publicly, on record, said that illegal immigration is a national problem but when Reps get involved, it's all of a sudden not a problem and we should allow it unfettered. And that's just one example. If you tell a Rep politician you will give him a billion dollars to vote for a Democrat issue, he would. If you give a Dem a billion dollars to vote for a Republican issue, the Dem would blow the billion dollars, request government assistance because it's not his fault he blew the money, and then whine and cry about some other issue and completely ignore illegal immigration until another Dem brings it up again.

#37 | Posted by humtake at 2019-06-17 12:15 PM | Reply

I'd really like to vote for these Democrats who are calling for unfettered immigration. Can you please provide a few names and policy positions or quotes that show their support for totally open borders? You're basically claiming all Democrats feel this way, but maybe if you just point out 3-4 mainstream Democrats, that'll be sufficient.

Miz,

"in a perverted sort of way it's interesting to see power in the hands of a character like this"

Seems to me that's why the 2 term limit exists in the first place.

To protect the country from such ideas.

I don't know if he's right his supporters would "demand" as he says but it's a moot point.

Dylan,

"Can you please provide a few names and policy positions or quotes that show their support for totally open borders?"

I don't think your question has any point.

It's not what degree of openness you support.

It's whether you believe in closed borders or not.

Sort of like a boat with holes.

How many holes or size of holes doesn't matter.

#43 | Posted by BillJohnson at 2019-06-18 05:40 AM | Reply

I should rephrase that.

A small number of holes can be manageable.

Once you get past the point where there's more water coming in than is being removed, your fate is sealed.

The US simply can not sit back and let people come into the country without going through proper channels and being vetted.

The fact they happen to be mostly of Latin origin doesn't make this racially motivated.

The point, though, is that the OP posted that Democrats are for "unfettered immigration." That is a blatant falsehood. As this isn't an immigration thread, I'm not really interested in debating immigration here. My main objective was to call out an obvious lie, and as the OP has not responded, I'm guessing that person also knew it was an obvious lie.

Dylan,

"The point, though, is that the OP posted that Democrats are for "unfettered immigration." That is a blatant falsehood."

But is it really?

I mean...either you support full compliance with the law or don't.

Personally, the way I see it, if you don't expect full compliance with the law, you are supporting de facto "unfettered immigration".
